Gajser wins MXGP battle in Lommel!
Tim Gajser has just won a Grand Prix for the first time in his career in the deep sand of Lommel. The HRC-Honda pilot proved to be the most regular in the MXGP class, finishing second twice!
In the first moto the Slovenian had to admit his superior in Romain Febvre, the Frenchman who had clearly been deep after the race to claim the series victory, did not get further than fourth place in the second moto. This meant that the Yamaha pilot fell short of the Grand Prix victory. The second heat victory went to Max Anstie. The Briton, who easily won the qualifying series yesterday, fell in the first corner in the first moto, which immediately ended his race. The saved energy apparently came in handy in the second moto as he was able to quickly pass Tim Gajser, who started at the front, and immediately opened up a large gap. When the British Standing Construct pilot crashed with a few minutes of racing left and had to relinquish the lead to world championship leader Tim Gajser, things looked bad for a while. However, Max Anstie quickly corrected that crooked situation and thus took some revenge for that first heat and a possible grand prix victory that went up in smoke in that first corner...
Tim Gajser managed to win the Grand Prix with two second places, ahead of Romain Febvre who won the first series and finished fourth in the second series. Glenn Coldenhoff was the third man to trot onto the podium. The Dutchman now seems to be back after his serious injury sustained during training in Lommel, and can hopefully close that chapter with this podium.
Then we will also go over the results of the other lowlanders. Jeremy Van Horebeek scored a fifth place overall with a sixth place in the first moto and a seventh place in the second moto. The Motoblouz Honda pilot even rode in third place for a long time in the second moto until the proverbial energy tank became depleted. Another Honda pilot, but a factory pilot, Brian Bogers finished thirteenth overall, thanks to a fifteenth place in series one and a ninth place in series two. Just after Brian Bogers, Jeffrey Dewulf is fourteenth overall. The man from West Flanders scored two great results with a sixteenth place in heat one and a twelfth place in heat two!
Kevin Strijbos, the Grand Prix winner three years ago in 2016, did not get further than sixteenth place overall. In the first heat, Strijbos started in eighth place, more than decent by his current standards, and in this way he was able to set a decent pace, after which he fell back to thirteenth place. In the second moto the Yamaha pilot started around twentieth position and stayed there for the entire race, eventually finishing nineteenth.
Micha-Boy De Waal scored six points in Lommel, good for eighteenth place overall. De Waal finished in twenty place in the first round and then finished sixteenth in the second round. In twenty place in the daily rankings we find Lars van Berkel who also managed to collect six points, with two eighteenth place finishes. Cedric Grobben, Nino Dekker and Menno Aussems then finished twenty-second, twenty-fourth and twenty-fifth in the day's results and all three failed to score any points.
