Avrie Berry completes difficult 2019 season in Imola
Avrie Berry scored seven points in the penultimate WMX round in Imola, Italy. This puts the KTM Diga Junior Racing rider at number 15de place in the World Cup standings. However, Berry will no longer start the last match in Turkey.
It was sweltering in and around the famous Autodrome Enzo e Dino Ferrari. Avrie always had a good start, but because she has been struggling with glandular fever since the beginning of this season, she turned out not to be physically equipped to achieve a good result.
In the first moto the young American dropped back to 16de place after starting in the top 10. She dropped to P19 the next day, although she piloted her KTM SX250F to a fourth place at the start. “I had hoped to get a top 15 on Sunday, but unfortunately that just wasn't possible,” Berry said. “Still, I'm happy that I just did what I could in Imola. Although it is very difficult to compete if you are not nearly as fit as normal! Especially in an oven such as in Imola you have to dose. By the way, I couldn't drive faster because I don't have enough strength at the moment and then I would still make mistakes. Given the circumstances, we have decided not to travel to Turkey for the final round of the world championship. So Italy was my last race of the season. That's why I'm especially looking forward to getting healthy again and coming back stronger next year.”
Imola was also Avrie's last race for KTM Diga Junior Racing team. The rider from Michigan made her WMX debut with the Belgian team in 2017. She made excellent progress in a short time. After her first points at the end of 2017, she grew to the top 10 level. Her personal best performance was an 11th place in the Lombardy GP (Ottobiano) in 2018. Although her second full World Championship campaign was not as successful as hoped, Berry did well this season in Canada where she participated in the West Coast series. Avrie won several rounds and convincingly won the title.
“I really enjoyed myself in Canada this summer. It was more of a coincidence, but despite my illness, circumstances did play in my favor. The rounds are easier and the heats are shorter than in the World Championships. Even the other sessions on race day take less time. So that was less stressful for my body than what we are presented with in the GPs. And in Canada it was not as hot as it was in Italy last weekend. Riding the Canadian Championship also reminded me of how high the level of WMX is.”
This weekend Kay Karssemakers will be at the start of the final round in the EMX125 championship in Uddevalla, Sweden. The 15-year-old Dutchman is currently 16th in the standings.
