Totney on the podium, Gregoire narrowly missing!
The fifth match of the KNMV Open Dutch Youth Championship was held under summer conditions in Geldermalsen. On behalf of the Team Youth Pro MX, Elvis Totney was allowed to climb back onto the podium, the Briton finished second in the 50cc class. Dean Gregoire rode very well, but he narrowly missed out on the podium due to a poorer result during the second heat. Jur van Tuil and Sjevy Klokgieter also took action and both managed to significantly increase their points total in the championship!
KNMV ONK 50cc:
In the lightest class, Elvis managed to start fifth. The Briton then quickly improved to third place and took over second place on the third lap. In the second half of the race Jaspers is stronger and he takes over second place from Elvis who crosses the finish line in third place. Jur did not have a good start, but from 26th place the rider from Wamel managed to fight back to a neat fifteenth place!
While the sun is getting stronger, the riders are preparing for the second round. Elvis now starts off very strong and takes the lead. In the first lap, Torre Van Mechgelen takes the lead and the Belgian does not relinquish it. Elvis tries to displace his KTM colleague, but he remains 'cool' and wins the second heat and the day's classification. Elvis comes second in both this heat and the day rankings. Jur has now made a good start, but he has to find his rhythm and therefore crosses the finish line in eleventh place.
KNMV ONK 65cc KW:
Dean's first heat does not start well and the Brabander comes out of the first corner in eighth position. Fortunately, he manages to recover quickly because at the end of the first round the student is already in third place! The pursuit of Dex Kooiker is started, but he does not give up easily. The battle for second place is great, but Kooiker can withstand the pressure from Dean who has to settle for third place. Sjevy's race goes well for the 8-year-old KTM rider who starts fifteenth. He can immediately make up places in the first round and he seems to be entering the top ten. However, that does not happen and Sjevy drops back to twelfth place where he will also finish.
The start of the second heat goes very badly for Dean who does not have the bike in gear when the starting gate drops. The Alpinestars-clad rider quickly gives chase and he rides a great first lap! From 25th place he fought his way to fifth place, only to crash a little later. This slide drops him back to tenth place, but he quickly improves this position. From tenth place, Dean comes back to a beautiful sixth position going into the final lap. In a great way, Dean manages to make up two more places and therefore ends up fourth in this heat and the day's rankings! Sjevy started ninth, but he crashed on the first lap. As a result, he has to work his way forward from the backfield and the KTM rider comes back to a nice tenth place!
Next time:
The KNMV ONK continues on July 14 in Borculo. That weekend Dean will be in action during the 24MX Masterkids in Northern France.
