Technology: 7 things you need to know about chains and sprockets!
The chain of your dirt bike is a part that exerts a lot of force. You can significantly extend or double the lifespan of this important part by properly maintaining and adjusting it. Maintaining and replacing these parts is not specialist work, but do it the right way. Read below how to deal with a chain and sprockets.
- Inspect chain and sprockets before every ride. Turn the chain several times and check whether all elements are still attached evenly. Don't forget to inspect the chain lock as well. Look for overly sharp teeth, overly recessed teeth, missing teeth and crooked teeth. Don't take any risks and never leave if the sprockets and chain are too worn. Check the tension before every ride and adjust if necessary. Always consult your dirt bike manual to determine the correct clearance.
- Lubricate your chain before each set. Yes, for every series! A chain on a dirt bike is perhaps the part that takes the most heat during competition. So don't save on a spray can of chain grease. A well-lubricated chain reduces friction! Also look for the right product. A good motocross chain lubricant should penetrate, lubricate and attract as little sand as possible. Test a few spray cans and make the right choice. Chain grease must dry again after penetration so that no or as little sand as possible sticks to it. A good product will also not throw away fat during the competition. Spray sufficient grease on your chain and rotate the rear wheel a few revolutions to let the grease take effect. WD40 and CRC 5-56 are not the right products to lubricate a chain. The lubricating properties are minimal, especially for a dirt bike chain.
- Count the number of links. When you purchase a new chain, count the number of links over a certain distance and write them down. For example, you count 11 links over a distance of 40 cm with a new chain. This way you have a gauge for wear. Take this measurement regularly to determine wear.
- Always replace your chain and sprockets at the same time. There is no point in replacing a chain without sprockets or vice versa. The wear already incurred means that your new parts will break in more quickly and therefore need to be replaced more quickly. So always order a chain set from your local motocross dealer. When replacing the chain set, it is best to also check the chain slider, rollers and chain guide. You also replace these if they have broken in.
- Use a good chain cleaner or kerosene to clean your chain. If you have a chain with O-rings, pay close attention to whether your product is suitable for this. Kerosene is also safe for o-ring chains. Use a brush specifically made for cleaning chains. Use compressed air to blow away the last bits of contamination.
- Adjust your chain tension correctly and make sure your rear wheel is straight. Check your dirt bike manual for the correct clearance. If you do not have this, the play in the center of the swingarm at the top must be between 48 and 58 mm. Check the clearance several times and rotate your rear wheel in three different positions as a chain wears unevenly. Make sure your rear wheel is straight, so check the marks on the chain tensioners on both sides. A crooked rear wheel causes extra friction and therefore wear of the chain and sprockets. Too little play places an unnecessary load on the primary shaft of your gearbox when the rear suspension compresses. The bearing of the output shaft is irreversibly damaged.
