Stefan Everts must undergo surgery for a big toe
The consequences of the malaria attack continue to have a hard impact on the daily life of Stefan Everts (46). The ten-time world champion fought against death at the end of last year. Now he has to go under the knife for the third time.
In two previous operations, Everts already partially lost six toes and now part of his right big toe also has to be removed. Whether the big toe will have to be removed in its entirety or just the upper phalanx can only be determined during the operation itself. Previously, 'the Legend' lost six toes, two on his left foot and four on the right. The operation is scheduled for next Thursday at the University Hospital of Leuven.
It is one setback after another for Everts, who contracted malaria last year during a charity match in Lubumbashi, Congo. The day before his departure to Africa, our colleagues from MX Vintage had a telephone conversation with Stefan. You can read and listen to it via this link. We wish Stefan and his family much courage in these difficult moments.
