Cianciarulo right back in Hangtown with victory!
Adam Cianciarulo must without a doubt have been one of the unluckiest pilots leaving the last supercross, held in Las Vegas. Mitch Payton's American pool saw his title ultimately go to Dylan Ferrandis due to a crash. One of the questions asked was; How did Adam recover from this mental blow?! The second most frequently asked question was how well are Dylan Ferrandis and Chase Sexton already in their motocross rhythm?! They had blown into Hangtown on their cloud of racing gasoline and champagne fumes after winning their supercross title.
All three were already at the appointment, just like Justin Cooper. The youngster from the Yamaha team, who is starting his second professional season, led the first moto from start to finish in a mature manner. Even under the heavy pressure from Adam Cianciarulo, the Yamaha pilot barely budged at all. With this he scored his second series victory of his career. This for Adam Cianciarulo and both 250 supercross champions Dylan Ferrandis and Chase Sexton. In this first heat we also saw a nice catch-up race by Hunter Lawrence who finished eleventh after a crash. His compatriot Wilson Todd, who trained sixth in qualifying, scored fifteenth place.
In the second round the pilots had to compete not only against each other but also against the natural elements. The rain turned the course into a very technical and treacherous circuit. Once again a Yamaha took the holeshot in this series, this time it was not Justin Cooper but his teammate Colt Nichols. However, he soon had to give way to Adam Cianciarulo, who seemed to feel most at home in these conditions. The American lost friend and foe and won by a wide margin over Alex Martin, who finished second ahead of the Yamaha trio with his Suzuki; Colt Nichols, Justin Cooper and Dylan Ferrandis. Chase Sexton again finished just behind Dylan Ferrandis, this time good for sixth place. Wilson Todd finished ninth, better than his compatriot Hunter Lawrence who finished twelfth.
For Thomas Covington, his return to his homeland is starting to look more and more like a horror story. The Husqvarna pilot, who was good for 12 series and 4 Grand Prix victories in the World Championship in the 5 seasons that he was active here, scored a 27th and 22nd place in Hangtown.
