TBT: Aubin on pole, Dutch strong!
It is #ThrowBackThursday Today we go back to April 25, 2009. Many expect that the French MX2 domination will come to an end on the Eurocircuit. Nicolas Aubin clearly thinks differently, he will start from pole tomorrow after winning qualifying quite easily today. The Yamaha rider (photo) currently occupies eighth place in the championship. The Dutch did very well, all three men managed to place in the top eleven, Ceriel Klein-Kromhof finished fifth.
In the qualifying race, Loic Larrieu takes the best start ahead of teammate Aubin, Nick Triest, Mike Kras and Klein-Kromhof. Rui Goncalves follows and he quickly manages to get to third place on the first lap. There have also been riders in trouble in the early stages such as Gautier Paulin, Zach Osborne and Wyatt Avis. A little further on, Evgeny Bobrishev and Joel Roelants also fall. Aubin quickly takes control and is also able to distance herself quite quickly. Goncalves attacks Larrieu, who rides particularly strongly. After three laps Simpson comes up, he passes teammate Goncalves and a little later he is able to pass Larrieu. However, Aubin already has a large lead and he drives to victory. Simpson comes second and seems to have found his feet again, although of course one swallow does not make a summer. Larrieu is good for third place and is very happy with that. If Goncalves has to slow down, Vanhorebeek can make up places, he finishes fourth for Klein-Kormhof, well behind Larrieu! The Dutchman rides very well, he rides for Vanhorebeek for a long time and later comes under pressure from Paulin and Marvin Musquin. He managed to keep both men at bay and CKK came in a very good fifth. The performance of Wild-Card driver Mike Kras and Herjan Brakke was also very impressive. The duo that normally competes in the European Championships finished tenth and eleventh respectively!
