MXGP return to Middle East?
YouthStream vice president David Luongo confirmed that the Motocross World Championships are likely to return to the Middle East in 2020. Losail Qatar was on the MXGP calendar from 2013 to 2017. Now the brand new Kuwait Motor City complex could be a serious candidate to host a Grand Prix.
MXGP circuit builder Greg Atkins has created an international circuit in Kuwait that meets all requirements. So it could well be that the Kuwaitis also want to bring a GP to their country! Luongo also said that the recent acquisition of Youthstream by Switzerland's Infront will help in the global expansion of the MXGP world championship.
“The Middle East is still in negotiations,” he noted. “It is still early in the year, but I already have a good feeling that we will be there again in 2020. We have requests from South America and the Middle East which is a positive trend for the championship.” Above is a video of Motocross Action test rider Dennis Stapleton who recently visited Kuwait and rode the Kuwait Motor Town motocross track.
“We believe the boost from Infront will bring some requests, but we have only just started working together,” he added. “Nothing has been completed yet, but there are many discussions with organizers outside Europe. That shows that MXGP is very popular and interesting.” The MXGP currently has Argentina, Indonesia (twice), Russia, China and Hong Kong as Fly-Away events on the calendar.
