Jago “Iceman” Geerts about successful GP Trentino!
The GPs in Argentina and Great Britain were so disappointing that Jago Geerts was so successful in Valkenswaard and Arco di Trento! Geerts added to his third place in the Grand Prix of the Netherlands today with a brilliant follow-up with a second place (2-2) in the GP of Trentino. The trend break has started and the Monster Energy Kemea Yamaha MX2 showed up with great panache.
There was no match for the unapproachable Jorge Prado today, but Geerts rode with courage and hardly made a mistake, even on a treacherous, hard track. “I had already started the change for myself in the second series in Valkenswaard. I came from 7 or 8 to eventually become second. In terms of driving it already felt very good. Here I started strong with a second place in the qualifying race. Today I had two pretty good starts, I was around 4 or 5 and each time I rode to second place. Now we have to work a little further on the starts. I would like to give it a holeshot. It will be interesting to see what that would bring.”
In the World Championship standings, Jago now occupies fifth place after four GPs, albeit barely 4 points behind his teammate Ben Watson, fourth. Due to his good driving and his recent results, the talented Balenian is now in a positive spiral. In recent weeks we have also seen a more attacking Geerts. Just think of the way he took the measure of Tom Vialle in the first series. “Maybe I ride a little more aggressively now, but I also had better starts which makes everything easier. The first two GPs lacked regularity. I rode one good and one less good series each time. Today I performed consistently which is certainly a step in the right direction!”
“Do I notice that I am in the right flow after Valkenswaard? Well, I don't feel that way myself, but subconsciously it could well be because things already went well last week. So I was now in a good position during the training sessions, which had always been a weak point in recent GPs. Then of course you have confirmation that everything is right in terms of speed.” In his first GP season, the former 125cc junior world champion was able to grow quietly alongside the experienced Ben Watson. Watson finished fourth last year, Jago finished eighth. The battle for leadership within the team is now wide open.
“I have more experience, I now know the courses better, but Ben has already achieved impressive results this season. It will certainly be exciting for that first place within the team!” Geerts will be at the start in both Dutch Masters of Motocross competitions in Oss and Axel in the coming weeks. For the next GP we have to wait until Mantova in mid-May. Given the sandy surface, Jago could also perform very well there.
