Australian MXGP round far from round!
During the British GP weekend, there was mention of an Australian World Cup round in 2020 in Perth. That would be the first since 2001. Although it is not that far yet, because local promoter Willie Thomson, from Dirt High Promotion, may have been going a little too fast in Matterley Basin!
In a chat with circuit announcer Roger Warren, Thomson let slip that a three-year contract was in the works. The deal was not yet complete, but the Australian at least had a good eye on it.
Although Australasia is an important potential market for MXGP rights holder YouthStream, developments surrounding a Grand Prix in Perth are still in a 'design phase'. “I can't comment on it at this time,” said Youthstream vice president David Luongo. “We are indeed in negotiations, but nothing has been finalized yet. We do hope to return to Australia. Discussions have been going on for some time but the plan has not yet been finalized.”
It sounded like the track for the Australian GP would be built at a horse racing track in Perth. The date put forward was the second round of the World Cup - after Argentina. Another option is the famous Manjimup. That track is located about 250 kilometers south of Perth and hosted the Motocross des Nations in 1992. Junior Slegers participated in the Manjimup 15.000 two years ago.
