Erik Willems misses opening match EMX2T
Two-stroke top rider Erik Willems unfortunately has to miss the first round of the EMX2T championship in Matterley Basin. Last year the Husqvarna rider finished third in the EMX300 but he still has to deal with a persistent injury.
Four Dutch people, but unfortunately not a single Belgian at the start of the EMX2T opening race. “I probably suffered a stress fracture in the wrist joint in May. When I crashed the week before Imola last year, I hurt my wrist. Still, I kept driving. After all, there was still something to be gained in both the final standings of the European Championship and the Coupe de l'Avenir," Erik explains.
After the Coupe de l'Avenir in Baisieux, Willems decided to take a break. Even after three weeks of rest, it turned out that he was still experiencing pain. Further investigation revealed that he suffered from Keinbock's disease. This causes one of the bones in the wrist joint to receive insufficient blood supply, which can cause the bone to die.
To solve the problem, the Husqvarna Belgium rider went under the knife at the end of November. This was followed by a long rehabilitation that continues today. “Unfortunately it is still too early for Matterley Basin this weekend, but of course I hope to be there again for the second EMX2T round in Mantova on May 12.
