Cairoli rides to easy GP victory in Matterley!
The ancient warrior, Antonio Cairoli added Grand Prix victory 87 to the list this weekend. The Italian was handed this on a tray, so to speak, by Tim Gajser. The Slovenian proved to be the fastest all weekend on the beautiful Matterley Basin course, but a serious crash in the first heat eliminated him from the Grand Prix victory...
In this first moto it was Antonio Cairoli who managed to take the holeshot, but the KTM pilot soon had to let the HRC Honda pilot, Tim Gajser, go ahead. He took off like a shot from a bow, but made the mistake of continuing to push after the decisive separation. As a result, he took a little too much risk and the Slovenian two-time world champion fell hard. Without much problem because he soon stood up again and continued his race on a bent HRC Honda. However, he lost his lead in the race, as well as second place, which was taken by a strong driving Gautier Paulin. Tim Gajser would finish third ahead of the Belgians Clément Desalle and Jeremy Van Horebeek.
The second heat again saw Antonio Cairoli as the fastest starter, but the Sicilian again quickly had to let Tim Gajser go ahead. The Slovenian was smarter and more cunning this time. He extended his lead to a maximum of seven seconds and consolidated it without taking too many risks. Antonio Cairoli put some pressure on the HRC Honda pilot in the final laps, but he did not crack. This way, Tim Gajser was still able to end the weekend with a good feeling. The Grand Prix victory of course went to Antonio Cairoli with his first place in the first moto and his second place in the second moto. In this second heat, Gautier Paulin again finished nicely on the podium, this time in third.
How did the boys from the Low Countries score?
In the first heat the Belgians scored strongly with Clément Desalle on four and Jeremy Van Horebeek on five. Belgian motocross fans also saw Julien Lieber cross the finish line in tenth place. A strong performance by the Belgian top players. Nathan Renkens finished twenty-fourth.
In the second heat things went terribly wrong at the start for both Clément Desalle and Julien Lieber. Clément Desalle lost control of his motorcycle and rammed Julien Lieber. As a result, both Belgians fell to the ground, which immediately made a top result impossible for both. Ultimately, Clément Desalle would come back strongly to seventh place, Julien Lieber finished twentieth. The best Belgian in this second round was Jeremy Van Horebeek in sixth place on his private Honda from the Motoblouz SR Honda supported by Hexis Energy drink. Nathan Renkens finished twenty-third.
Dutch motocross fans could benefit from the performance of Glenn Coldenhoff, who is clearly on an upward trend. In the first moto the Standing Construct KTM pilot finished twelfth. This also made him the best Dutchman ahead of Brian Bogers, who fell outside the points in twenty-first place on his HRC Honda. Micha-Boy De Waal finished twenty-seventh and Sven Van der Mierden thirtieth.
For Glenn Coldenhoff, the second round brought an even better result with eighth place! The man who surprised everyone at the MXON in Red Bud is slowly but surely getting back into shape after his serious injury. Unfortunately for the Dutch MX fans, he was once again the only Dutchman in the MXGP class who managed to score points. Brian Bogers finished twenty-second with no points and still has a lot of work to do. Sven Van der Mierden finished two places lower in twenty-fourth and Micha-Boy De Waal finished twenty-eighth.
