MX Winter Training: the emergency plan!
Winter is coming. The titles have been divided, the battle has been fought to the end. But what do we do with the coming period without competitions?
Now a period of complete rest is approaching for most motocross riders, the winter break. But how do you survive this period? Everyone has heard it said: “You win the championship in the winter” or “I had a good/bad winter”. What do they want to say with that? Is it true that you can win a championship in the winter?
Of course you can't win an outdoor championship in the winter. A motocross race or championship must always be ridden. There are numerous factors that can throw a spanner in the works and cause you to miss out on the opportunity to win a title, such as an injury or engine failure. However, you can easily lose a season in the winter by not preparing yourself properly. In the next series of articles you will learn all kinds of tips from Physical Coach Yente Dourte (Coach at X Performance and Energy Lab) to ensure that your winter preparation runs optimally.
The emergency plan
The season is just around the corner, this is often the moment when many of us think: “Duh, I still have to get started”. In recent weeks and months I have shared many tips with you to get a better start to the season. It is of course possible that you have not yet had the motivation to start it, but then the question is, what should I do now to get in shape as quickly as possible?
- Don't procrastinate
One of the most important things, just don't procrastinate and work proactively. If you want results, you will have to work for them consistently. In the end you will be rewarded for it.
- Skip the preparation
Yes, you read it right! Don't waste your time doing the preparation you would normally have to do in the winter. Start immediately with the real work, setting lap times and driving series against the clock. In the beginning this will look disastrous, but perseverance wins. Just remember, if you haven't done the preparations, (read here more about basic endurance and winter preparation) you are more susceptible to overtraining, illnesses, relapse in the middle of the season and the like. That's why it's not the smartest way, but it's an emergency solution. You can find more information about overtraining here recover
- Monitor yourself
Since the chance of overtraining is much greater without solid basic endurance or proper winter preparation, it is important that you listen carefully to your body. Measuring a morning pulse is an important tool you can use to detect overtraining. If you see that your morning heart rate continues to rise for at least 4 – 7 days, this may indicate overtraining. Then definitely try to reduce the intensity of your training. If you keep encountering overtraining, try asking a trainer for advice, he will be happy to help you plan your training in a responsible and efficient manner.
Good luck at the start of the season!
