Jeffrey Herlings at least six weeks of mandatory rest
The next six weeks will be all about recovery for Jeffrey Herlings. Last Friday, the KTM rider got into trouble during training in Albaida. After the incident, the MXGP World Champion immediately returned to Belgium where he underwent surgery the same evening. The 24-year-old Herlings will most likely miss a large part of the first half of the Grand Prix season. After six weeks of complete rest, the rider and the Red Bull KTM Racing Team will look at a plan for his return.
“I made a strange landing after a jump and was a little too close to the sand bank on the side of the track,” Herlings explains. “My foot became trapped between the motorcycle and the sand bank. I knew immediately that I was in trouble. When we saw that my foot was starting to swell, we decided to have an operation performed as soon as possible.”
Dr. Claes and his team performed this operation to fix multiple fractures in the world champion's foot. “The good news is that Dr. Claes is satisfied with the course of the operation. I now have no pain and my foot is no longer swollen. I will know more in six weeks, it all depends on how the bone recovers.” says 'The Bullet' in KTM's press release.
Herlings' absence is also a big setback for KTM team manager Dirk Gruebel. “This is a big disappointment for both the team and Jeffrey,” he says. “We prefer our riders to be fit and healthy for the start of the new season. It is a great pity that the consequences of this incident are so great. On another part of the circuit he might have gotten away with such a landing without any problems."
