Herlings is chasing Stefan Everts' record
He is already a legend himself, but Jeffrey Herlings has often stated that achieving Stefan Everts' record number of GP victories is one of his main goals. In addition to 10 world titles, The Legend also has 101 GP victories to his name. The question is how long the Belgian will hold the record...
Jeffrey Herlings is rapidly closing in on Stefan Everts in the all-time list of GP victories. In Imola “the bullet” recorded his 84th GP victory. Of these, he collected no fewer than 61 successes in MX2. In two seasons of MXGP, 23 units were added. At this rate, Everts' fabulous record could even be overturned in 2019.
When 'S72' brought the counter to 2006 in 101, many considered the victory record in the Motocross World Championship to be virtually untouchable. In total, Everts needed 15 years to bring his number to over 100 victories.
“I still remember when I started in the World Cup as a 15-year-old in 2010. Meanwhile, it is almost 10 years later, imagine another 10 years!” Jeffrey let slip after the Grand Prix of Assen. “I think I am already halfway through my career. I missed two, maybe three world titles. My main goal is to equal the record of 101 GP. I now have 84 so I still need 18 GPs to break the record.”
In 2019, Herlings will get 20 chances. If he reaches the highest podium 17 times, the same number as this year, his dream will become reality. When it comes to Everts' record number of world titles, Jeffrey is more modest. “World titles, that's harder to say. The season is getting very long now and I was lucky with my broken collarbone that I only missed one game. Imagine if it was an ankle and I was out for six or eight weeks. Then the championship would have been as good as over. In this sport he simply has to be fit, but unfortunately the risk is quite high. So we'll see, but hopefully I can add a few more titles.”
