“Stefan Everts: “The fact that I am still here is the best Christmas present”
Stefan Everts is doing better after he was struck by malaria at the beginning of December. He was in critical condition for a while but his health continues to improve. The family of the ten-time world champion issued a press release about this today.
Everts started his (physical) rehabilitation yesterday. Compared to the worrying condition of a few weeks ago, he is already doing much better. Although he is still in the intensive care unit of the University Hospital in Leuven, he is already getting out of bed and can walk a bit.
After a charity match in Congo In mid-November, 'the Legend' had contracted an aggressive form of malaria. Everts' health condition had deteriorated to such an extent that he was in danger of dying for a while. However, examinations last week showed that neither his brain nor his organs suffered permanent damage from the malaria attack. There is no certainty yet about the duration of his stay in intensive care and his rehabilitation.
Support from Sven Nys and Tom Boonen
A video was shown at the Sports Gala on Saturday in which: Sven Nys en Tom Boonen to encourage the unfortunate motocross rider. Click here to see the clip. Everts himself realizes after a good conversation with the professors in Leuven that he has narrowly escaped the worst. “The fact that I am still here is my best Christmas present,” he says.
Stefan and his family would like to thank everyone for the enormous support they have received in recent weeks and wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. In the event of new developments, the family - who now wants to focus entirely on Stefan's rehabilitation - will communicate again via a press release.
