Stefan Everts & Thierry Klutz provide the show in Congo!
Via Franck Verhoestraete, Thierry Klutz was invited for the first time to a (4-hour) enduro competition in Congo last year. This was such a fantastic experience that Thierry went again and convinced Stefan Everts to come along. The purpose of their trip: to support a local charity and get a taste of a unique race!
Never heard of the “4 Hours of Lubumbashi”? No problem, neither do we! After all, you don't visit the heart of Africa every week. Although it was already the second time for Thierry Klutzy, this competition remains a bit of an expedition with a lot of arrangements. Not least when it comes to insurance and vaccines.
The race itself is also quite a challenge as you ride solo for 4 hours in sweltering conditions. More than just an enduro, albeit with a very nice circuit, the “4 Heures de L'shi” is also a social project. The competition is organized by a club that has been supporting local children since 2002 with various projects, such as building a school. The combination of contact with another culture, the landscape and the charity (Mikembo) makes this a unique experience. And then we're not even talking about the competition itself!
Thierry Klutz was at the top of the Belgian enduro for years and scored highly in Le Touquet, but the “4 Heures de L'shi” remains an experience every time. “It was a crazy four-hour race. Very well organized on a very beautiful course, and this year's finish was beyond description. Come on, I'll try anyway! Going into the last lap I ran out of gas. Stefan was 30 seconds behind me and then stopped to give me half a liter of petrol. Then I went to refuel so I could start the last lap properly. Stefan had run out of gas 1 kilometer from the finish! Then I stopped and it was my turn to give it gas. So we decided to cross the line together... And we were both declared winners.
Actually, that wasn't the best part. During the awards ceremony, Stefan decided to give away his equipment on site for the auction in aid of Mikembo. The prices really skyrocketed, in the end the material of 'the Legend' fetched no less than 5672 euros!!! Me and Stefan looked at each other and we couldn't believe our ears. This certainly leaves me wanting more, I would like to come back next year. Even if only for the great reception.”
