MX2 victory for Ferrandis, USA & Belgium in trouble!
In persistent rain, Dylan Ferrandis narrowly took the MX2 qualifying victory ahead of Hunter Lawrence. The unpredictable MXoN roller coaster lived up to its reputation. Both Aaron Plessinger and Jago Geerts had an eventful race. Virtually, the American and Belgian teams now have one foot in the B final!
Fast starter Henry Jacobi was very successful at the start. The German had Plessinger, Lawrence, Ferrandis and Cervelling behind him. Because Geerts briefly came into contact with Calvin Vlaanderen, he saw his start go up in smoke. The Belgian MXoN debutant pulled off an excellent first lap, recovered from 30 to 18, but then things went wrong again! Jago crashed into the rear wheel of Swiss Killian Auberson and suddenly fell with his stomach to the ground on the straight. Fortunately without much problem.
Flanders was able to advance systematically and would finish 12th, less than 2 seconds behind Plessinger. The same Plessinger took the measure of Jacobi and seemed to be storming to victory in front of his own audience. However, the Yamaha star rider completely misjudged a big jump and ended up spectacularly next to the mountain! This gave the American dream comeback a serious blow, because Eli Tomac had already dropped out in the first heat. After an exciting duel, Ferrandis held off a pressing Hunter Lawrence, already at the GEICO-Honda this weekend. Jacobi was able to achieve a very creditable third place ahead of Cervelling and Prado.
Geerts would fall a second time. Yet the former 125cc junior world champion continued to fight and still managed to finish 18th. Since one result is lost, there is hope for direct qualification for both Belgium and the US, but then Jeremy Van Horebeek and Justin Barcia respectively will have to deliver a good result in the final Open qualifying race!
