Beerens, Van Drunen, Knuiman and Mesters are celebrating.
At MCC Geldermalsen celebrations were held four times today during the KNMV Open Dutch Youth Championship. Made in the lightest class Jenairo Beerens It was still exciting due to a slider, but he recovered very strongly. Harley O'Callaghan won the competition in Gelderland. Lotte van Drunen (65KW) was supreme and won both heats slightly because Damien Knuiman (65GW), Bradley Masters (85KW) and Raivo Dankers (125) also did. In the 85cc Big Wheels the victory went to Kay Karssemakers (85GW) which keeps the championship exciting.
50cc:
A fourth place was enough for Beerens to take the title, but within five meters things went wrong. The Husqvarna rider crashes and has to give chase. Niels Pepers takes the lead but Harley O'Callaghan quickly takes over. The Brit then wins the match ahead of Cody de Beer and Pepers. Beerens comes back very strong and rejoins the group in the last lap, then battles for fourth place, but the race ends just too early. Beerens comes sixth and has to wait a little longer to celebrate.
Pepers is also the best starter in the second round, losing the lead to Elvis Totney in the first lap. In the third laps it is Beerens who takes over the lead and he never loses it. He wins the heat and thus secures the title. O'Callaghan comes second ahead of compatriot Totney.
65cc KW:
All eyes are on Lotte van Drunen who gets off to a good start. However, it is Dex Kooiker who takes the lead, but Van Drunen dives inside in the first corner. The 11-year-old is chased throughout the race by three Yamaha riders. In the final phase, Van Drunen takes some distance and then Mike Kennedy intervenes. He puts Kooiker aside so as not to lose sight of Van Drunen. The queen wins despite the pressure for Kennedy and Jayson van Drunen.
In the second heat it is again Van Drunen with the best start ahead of Kooiker and Kennedy. This trio does not lose sight of each other, but Van Drunen's leadership is never really in danger. Kooiker is now down and comes second ahead of Kennedy.
65cc GW:
Only with two victories can Damien Knuiman decide the title battle early. Doensen briefly takes the lead in the first round, but Knuiman quickly manages to put things in order. He takes over the lead and then wins with a wide lead over Ray van Gelder. The Heli MX rider manages to pass Doensen and comes second ahead of the Limburger.
Doensen briefly takes the lead in the second moto, but Van Gelder storms to the front and takes over the lead in the second laps. Halfway through the race, Knuiman takes over second place from Doensen and a little later the rider from Wijchen is the leader! Van Gelder made a mistake and for this he drops back to third place. Knuiman also wins the second round and takes the title. Doensen comes second ahead of Van Gelder.
85cc KW:
The first round of the 85cc Kleine Wielen is dominated by Bradley Mesters. The Brabander gets off to the best start and never gets into trouble again. The Husqvarna rider wins ahead of Levi Schrik who is the first to congratulate the new champion. Schrik comes second for Cobus van de Vorstenbosch who can benefit from the bad luck for Noah Ho.
In the second round no one can match Mesters, who is in the lead from the first corner. Svenn Borger briefly holds second place, but then drops back very quickly. Schrik comes second from the first round, but sees Mesters continue to pull further and win with a 17-second lead. Schrik is now second for Van de Vorstenbosch.
85cc GW:
It is still exciting in the 85cc Big Wheels and the chance that the title battle will be settled today is very small. Kay Karssemakers takes the lead in the first round and he never relinquishes it. The Youth Pro MX rider wins ahead of Kay de Wolf and his teammate Scott Smulders. The race is flagged early by a red flag, enough has been driven for the race to count towards the championship.
In the second round it is De Wolf with the best start ahead of teammate Smulders and Karssemakers. In the second lap, De Wolf loses the lead to Karssemakers, who made a mistake in the second half of the race after a 'Blockpass' from Smulders. Smulders makes no mistakes and the Brabander wins the second heat ahead of Karssemakers and De Wolf. Sem de Lange also finished fourth in this round ahead of Cas Valk.
125cc:
In front of his own audience, Brian van der Klij takes the best start during the first heat. The lead is briefly taken over by Rob van de Veerdonk, but Van der Klij returns quickly. After a poor start, Dankers quickly managed to get into second place and took over the lead not much later. The Brabander wins ahead of Van der Klij and Boyd van der Voorn.
Kjeld Stuurman has the best start in the second round, but Van der Klij immediately takes over the lead. After five laps, Dankers takes the lead again and wins with a safe lead. Van der Voorn starts the race outside the top ten, but the Yamaha rider has set a good pace. He even managed to pass Van der Klij, meaning the Heli MX rider finished third. In the title battle, Dankers is doing well because his competitor Kjell Verbruggen cannot get further than fourth place in both heats!
Next week the grand final on the RES Axel circuit.
