Who else but Jeffrey Herlings could have won the qualification in Imola?! No one, of course. The Dutchman's race story can be briefly described, a good start as second, just behind Alessandro Lupino. However, the Gebben Kawasaki pilot very quickly saw Jeffrey Herlings passing by and that said everything. The newly crowned MXGP champion then outpaced everyone with a lightning-fast first lap and then slowly expanded his lead to win by just over twenty seconds.
The Dutchman did this for Clément Desalle. The Belgian got off to a good start in fourth, and first had his hands full with Alessandro Lupino in third place and then with Tim Gajser. However, both had to believe it, because Clément Desalle clearly showed that he was the second fastest man on the circuit. Tim Gajser then finished third. Another Belgian finished fourth with Julien Lieber who was also able to catch the slumping Alessandro Lupino. The two Monster Energy Kawasaki pilots still finished ahead of the Gebben Van Venrooy Kawasaki pilot who finished fifth.
Behind this five we saw three Yamahas. Jeremy Van Horebeek showed that after a tough weekend in Assen, with a virus in the urinary tract, he is now back and is quickly becoming ready for the MXON. De Jerre started around seventh - eighth place and was constantly involved in the duel between Jeremy Seewer and Shaun Simpson. For a while it looked like he would pass both, but at the end of the race he had to admit his superiority in Jeremy Seewer who finished sixth and Shaun Simpson who finished seventh. Jeremy Van Horebeek finished eighth. This meant he scored two places better than Kevin Strijbos.
And what about Antonio Cairoli? The Italian had a bad start in front of his own audience. His speed on the track, on the other hand, was such that he quickly moved to the front. Although he sometimes had tough duels along the way with, among others, Jeremy Van Horebeek and other boys who did not want to be eaten like steak and fries. However, the hunt for catch-up and hunger to move forward came to an abrupt end for Antonio Cairoli. When the multiple world champion came out of the corner in front of the pit lane with a little too much speed and therefore balanced very sharply on the edge of the track, things went mercilessly wrong. The engine threw him away and the Sicilian ended up in the doldrums between the artificially constructed motocross track and the pit lane. On the rock-hard surface of the underlying asphalt. The Italian lay there for a moment, but then slowly got up. It is not yet known whether any injuries were sustained in this crash.
Then all that remains is to report where the other lowlanders ended up. Glenn Coldenhoff finished in a disappointing sixteenth place. Nathan Renkens finished twenty-eighth on his KMP Honda and Brian Bogers on his HRC Honda finished thirty-second.
