VLM: Jens Van Meer at the party in Houtvenne
The new VLM Inters 500 champion Jens Van Meer made it a party in Houtvenne. Van Meer won both heats, each time ahead of Kenny Janssens. A regular Kevin Van Geldrop was an equally logical third.
The organization of MC De Vennecrossers had to make do without some famous players for the 13th round of the VLM Inters championship. After all, both Yentel Martens and Dietger Damiaens competed at the Belgian Masters of Motocross in Orp-le-Grand and Cedric Grobben rode the ADAC MX Masters in Gaildorf.
In that sense, the results in Houtvenne were somewhat predictable, but the first series certainly provided a spectacle! Jens Van Meer had to come back due to a missed start. Once again Kenny Janssens took the holeshot, but the KTM Racing Center pilot had to pass for Kevin Van Geldorp after two laps. Kevin seemed to be able to pull off a stunt for a moment, but once Van Meer had climbed to third place he was consistently the fastest man on the course. There was no limit to the BeTeMo leader and he won with a lead of 13 seconds over Janssens. Steven De Beuckelaer had started in the wake of Janssens and finished nicely in fifth. As so often in the quarter liters, champion Jonathan Banken was the first. In the second moto Banken would not only ride to his second victory, he again finished third overall!
The same trendsetters were in the lead in the final race, but Janssens not only took the holeshot, he also led resolutely until just before halfway. Van Meer, who started third, first dealt with Van Geldorp and then Janssens had to face the axe. Frederik Daenen, number four in the championship, sent his Yamaha from just outside the top 10 to fifth place. Which wasn't as impressive as his comeback in the opener. Then Frederik had started around 15th place to finish 6th (overall)!
Although Van Geldorp still occupies second place in the standings, the momentum has clearly shifted to Kenny Janssens. Janssens has set his sights on the vice-championship title and is now eight points behind Van Geldorp. We will know how that match will end on September 30, because then the Inters championship final will take place in Reet.
250cc rider Kristof Scheynen also managed a nice catch-up race in the second round and was able to join the podium alongside Banken and Jelle Verbruggen.
