Jeffrey Herlings completes party with Grand Prix victory!
After Jeffrey Herlings with his series victory, managed to win his first MXGP world title in the first round, it was a matter of seeing whether he could complete the party by also winning the Grand Prix victory.
The Dutchman got off to a good start, behind Glenn Coldenhoff and in front of Antonio Cairoli. But claiming the MXGP world title in the first moto had clearly disrupted his normal daily routine and supreme state of concentration because the newly crowned world champion crashed to the ground in the first moto. However, a crash, without much seriousness, was a perfect wake-up call for “The Bullit”. While Antonio Cairoli fought past Glenn Coldenhoff, Jeffrey Herlings in turn fought his way back from around eighth place to second place in just a few laps. To then further open the hunt for leader Antonio Cairoli. The Italian managed to stay out of the clutches of the Dutch beast, known as Jeffrey Herlings, until halfway through the match. We briefly had a nice joust between the two KTM pilots, but this ended in an anti-climax when Antonio Cairoli got stuck behind a doubled pilot and Jeffrey Herlings was able to pass the nine-time world champion.
This was immediately the signal for Jeffrey Herlings to be freed from all pressure and drive to the series victory and also a Grand Prix victory in Assen. In the series results of the second heat, Antonio Cairoli finished second, just like in the first heat, and Glenn Coldenhoff crossed the finish line in third. Hot on the heels of this was Max Anstie. Tim Gajser finished fifth, but this was a long way off.
As already mentioned, the Grand Prix victory went to Jeffrey Herlings with his 50 points out of 50. Antonio Cairoli was second on the podium. Both KTM pilots were flanked by Husqvarna pilot Max Anstie who narrowly held off home pilot Glenn Coldenhoff with his third and fourth place in the heats. We found the other lowlanders in the Grand Prix results with Clément Desalle in tenth place, Kevin Strijbos in ninth place, Julien Lieber in eleventh place, Jeffrey Dewulf in a very good and deserving fifteenth place, which can also be said of Sven Van der Mierden in sixteenth place. Brian Bogers, returning from injury, finished twentieth, which raises the question of whether returning to competition was really a good idea. Behind Brian Bogers we also find Nathan Renkens in twenty-third place, which is one place better than Lars van Berkel. Nino Dekker and Jeremy Van Horebeek both scored no points. Jeremy Van Horebeek is said to be suffering from an illness.
