Tomac extends his lead slightly again in Budds Creek!
Budds Creek was the penultimate match of the season, so it was the ideal time to deliver a mental blow to the competitor. We had to wait to see whether Marvin Musquin would deal this blow to Eli Tomac or whether it would be the other way around. Or did we get a match zero and everything remained pretty much the same.
In the first round the cards were already well shuffled in favor of Marvin Musquin. The Frenchman got off to a good start together with Ken Roczen and quickly pulled away together. This while the major competitor in the championship Eli Tomac had a bad start. While Eli Tomac tried to force his way forward and lost valuable time in these duels, we got a dominant display from Ken Roczen up front. The German kept the pace so tight at the front that Marvin Musquin could only focus on holding on, there were no real attacks and in the final phase of the race the Frenchman even had to let the German HRC Honda pilot go. This resulted in a great victory for Ken Roczen and an expensive loss of points for Marvin Musquin who finished second. In the meantime, Eli Tomac had already passed many of his colleagues and had already had a tough duel with his MXdN teammate Justin Barcia. His reward for all this hard work was a good third place, well behind the two Europeans. Jason Anderson finished fourth on his return from injury but did not start in the second moto and Blake Baggett finished fifth.
At the start of the second moto it was Marvin Musquin who came away on top. The Frenchman remained in the lead for about five laps and then had to acknowledge his superiority in Ken Roczen. The German again worked hard, but after two thirds of the match it seemed as if he was physically failing. Eli Tomac, who had already moved up to second place, saw his chance and passed Ken Roczen. However, the HRC Honda pilot was still confident. With a series victory and a second place, he, and not Eli Tomac with his third place and a series victory, would win overall. But there was Blake Baggett like a devil out of a box. The Rocky Mountain ATV/MC KTM WPS pilot seemed to have regained his form from last year in this second moto and set extremely fast lap times. El Chupacabra ate Phil Nicoletti, Justin Barcia and Marvin Musquin and then swallowed Ken Roczen for dessert. Not only did this put Blake Baggett in second place, it also tipped the scales for the overall win in favor of Eli Tomac. Blake Baggett came relatively close to the leader in the final phase, but it was Eli Tomac who crossed the finish line first. This for Blake Baggett, Ken Roczen and Marvin Musquin who finished fourth.
As we already mentioned, Eli Tomac took the lead for the overall with a third place and a series victory. Ken Roczen had the identical score of 45 points, but achieved this by first winning a heat and finishing third in the second heat. And as you know, “who has the best result in the last race” is the deciding factor in case of an equal number of points. Marvin Musquin was third on the podium. The Frenchman recorded a second and fourth place, good for 40 points. However, with this he sees the championship leader, Eli Tomac, five points more, increasing this to twenty points.
