Max Nagl and Jeremy Seewer praise Jeffrey Herlings
The 2018 MXGP season has certainly been dominated by Jeffrey Herlings so far, both in terms of speed and some much-discussed “drama moments”. The Bullit has no fewer than 11 GP victories to his name, including 11 with a double series victory. This tour de force earned the Red Bull-KTM rider praise and admiration from both fans and colleagues.
Even for Wilvo Yamaha's Jeremy Seewer – who is Herlings' effect already experienced up close in the MX2, the way in which the Dutchman is now imposing his will is remarkable. However, Jeffrey's start in MXGP was one of trial and error. That weak start in 2017 was caused by a hand injury and underestimation of what it takes to succeed in the MXGP.
“I'm impressed with what he's doing, knowing how difficult it is to race 450s at this level,” Seewer said. “The nice thing about this is to see that he was in a bit of trouble at the beginning of last year. So even a guy like Jeffrey Herlings needs time to adapt to this class and to the bike. And I'm currently trying to go through that process. I'm not saying that I will be a 'Jeffrey Herlings' next year, but I do plan to build further from where I am at the moment.”
The more experienced Max Nagl (TM Racing) points out how Jeffrey has mastered the KTM 450 SX-F and how he improved the weak points to complete the package. “He's got it all,” explains the German out. “Herlings has 'those moments' where everything you do just works. For example, if he chooses a track that is poorly located or does not seem to work; it works for him! He looks so good. The engine fits him perfectly. Jeffrey trains a lot and he has the physical strength needed for the 450. He had some problems with the start in the past but they worked on that and now he always starts at the front.”
Herlings came back - to everyone's surprise - very strong after his broken collarbone. He won the next three rounds and seems to be on course to make history again. At least if fate doesn't intervene. When asked how he and other MXGP riders can reach the level of the new MXGP superstar, Max laughs. “I wish I knew! And I see him riding almost every day during training…”
