In the picture: Paul Weyten
It's time again to put a photographer in the picture, in addition to all the everyday cross violence. This time, none other than Paul Weyten lists his 10 most beautiful moments from his richly filled photo career for us, and for once we put him in the picture ourselves.
Paul Weyten: It was not an easy task to put together a top 10 from the many thousands of photos. I have therefore put together my selection based on my feelings, and not on the subjective basis of “beautiful photo” as this will be different for everyone!
1: This is a photo of when Kim Savaste became world champion in the 85cc, and father and son ran into each other's arms with tears in their eyes... goosebumps!
2: After all these years, I still get shivers down my spine when I see those “big men” throwing their motorcycles through the air.
3: It was incredible to see Joël Roelants drive a few laps around the Genk circuit during Everts&friends after his accident. Truly a very beautiful moment!!
4: This is a photo of Joël Smets during his farewell match in Dessel. Both on and off the circuit, Joël was and is a “great gentleman”!! That day the King brothers, the Swede Hansson (World Champion of 1993) and many many others were there. This photo is not that special, but it was a very nice moment to see Joel in action for the last time that day.
5: My grandparents lived within walking distance of the Molenbergen in Wuustwezel, and that is how I became infected with the motocross virus as a little boy. so there certainly can't be a photo of Kevin Strijbos missing. Kevin himself has been “in the picture” so much, which is why I ultimately chose this photo. That boy's look when he was allowed to sit on Kevin's motorcycle for a moment is indescribable.
6: Anyone who thinks about motocross can hardly ignore the Everts family. Here I had the opportunity to capture all three of them together on their motorcycle.
7: MXON 2015 Ernée: That moment when many thousands of (French) fans started singing along to the national anthem. My hair stood straight up on my arms…unforgettable!!
8: This is a photo from the Valkenswaard GP, where Ben Watson and Tim Gajser dived into the water together right at the start.
9: I started my photography career in the 80s by going to what was then BLM. When, as a young boy, I saw the inters driving with, among others, Leon Muffels, Jo Goetschalckx. They were real stars for me at the time. When I now see that my family (Jens van Meer) has currently become a top player at the same inters, I can only be proud.
10: Cairoli and Villopoto posed together for the lens. I don't think I'll ever experience that again.
