Double feelings among Winners without a final; Davy Sanders/Andres Haller are the new sidecarcross champions of Germany!
In the same weekend that the Belgian/Dutch duo Marvin Vanluchene and Ben van den Boogaart could no longer avoid the World Sidecar Cross title, a decision was also made for the Belgian/German couple Davy Sanders and Andres Haller due to unforeseen circumstances. After quite a bit of rumours, it became clear on Sunday evening that the final round of the German Sidecar Cross Championship in Jauer on September 9 would be cancelled. Sanders/Haller were the undisputed leaders in the German championship ahead of the Austrians Weiss/Schneider in second place and the Belgian/Dutch duo Jan Hendrickx/Peter Beunk in third place.
Since the final is canceled, Davy Sanders suddenly 'celebrated' his first major sidecar cross title not riding on a sidecar with his driver next to him, but riding without a helmet and on the way home from the GP in Roggenburg!
It must be a mixed feeling for Davy Sanders and Andres Haller to suddenly become German sidecar cross champions of 2018 without really crossing the finish line in glory. Already on Saturday evening, rumors spread to his racing driver Haller that the final for the German sidecar cross championship scheduled for September 9 in Jauer, East Germany, could be canceled.
What's hot! If only a lot of water fell into Jauer! On the authority of the governor there, due to the persistent drought, and probably with the large forest fires around Berlin in mind, it was decided that the motocross event could not take place there. So the Belgian Davy Sanders suddenly became German champion at the moment it became clear that Jauer was not going to continue. Sanders/Haller, the only team to finish on the podium at all German competitions this year, were actually looking forward to the final in Jauer.
MxMag spoke to Davy Sanders who told us the following;
'It is indeed a mixed feeling. Already on Saturday evening we found out through Andres that there was a good chance that Jauer would be canceled. On Sunday evening in Roggenburg someone came to tell us that it had been canceled definitively. I didn't want to believe it because I wanted to ride the final. On the way home we found out that Jauer had indeed been canceled definitively and it was only then that we realized that I had just become German Sidecar Cross Champion!
This is a result that I am proud of. We have finished on the podium every DM and so this title is well deserved. I would like to thank my baking artist, team, helpers, sponsors and supporters for their support. However, I would have seen this outcome differently.
I would have liked to ride in the final. We had some great races this season and had a lot of battles with Weiss/Schneider, among others. In the DM in Aichwald we came second behind Weiss twice, which is not bad, but I was keen to get back at him, which worked out nicely in the DM afterwards. In Gerstetten we were first in qualifying and in both heats with a head-to-tail victory. That felt so good! That's why we wanted to ride that final in Jauer. Maja, now we are suddenly German Champions of 2018 and finally I would like to congratulate Weiss/Schneider and Hendrickx/Beunk on their second and third place in the German championship. After all, we have fought some great duels together this season.
Now we'll take the 'final' feeling out of the fridge and take it with us to Vesoul to perform even better in the last Grand Prix this weekend!'
