MXGP: Jeffrey Herlings takes full advantage in Semarang!
Before the Grand Prix in Pangkal Pinang, Jeffrey Herlings feared that he would return from Asia without the Redplate. Nothing could be further from the truth, the Netherlands has once again firmly taken the lead in the FIM MXGP World Championship. The 23-year-old rider travels to Loket for the next GP with a 24-point lead. In addition to Herlings, Tim Gajser (2-3) and Clement Desalle (4-2) are on the podium. Cairoli finished fourth despite his thumb injury, but he lost twelve points to his KTM colleague.

Herlings almost wins the FOX Holeshot Award, but things almost go wrong for the Brabander on the first jump. Cairoli takes over the award and the leadership from Herlings, who is followed by Desalle, Gautier Paulin and Romain Febvre. It is impossible to describe how Gasjer does it, but the Honda rider passes Febvre, Paulin, Desalle and Herlings in the first half lap! The first time over the start-finish line, Cairoli is the leader, but one lap later the lead belongs to the Slovenian! A number of mistakes in a row cause Paulin and Febvre to miss the redplate holder. Desalle then also tries to pass by Herlings, who manages to prevent this. In the first half of the match, Herlings battles past Paulin and Febvre to connect with Cairoli. Where Febvre and Desalle managed to pass as drivers, Herlings managed to pass the Italian nine-time world champion for second place. Gasjer has a lead of more than seven seconds over Herlings, but that is not enough! In ten minutes Herlings clears his deficit and takes the lead! The next victory is a fact and a very important one because Gasjer comes second ahead of Cairoli, who therefore loses five points. Desalle finished fourth after a battle with IceOne Racing rider Paulin.
UPDATE: Nagl and Coldenhoff are moved back ten places for ignoring the yellow flag!

Cairoli also managed to win the FOX Holeshot Award in the second round, narrowly ahead of Herlings and Desalle. The Italian quickly loses ground and the Kawasaki rider takes the lead. Just before the first lap starts, Herlings takes the lead from the Belgian. Gajser joins and the trio in the lead do not want to leave each other alone in the first ten minutes of the match. Herlings then manages to break free and steers the KTM to its next victory. Herlings wins ahead of Desalle and Gajser. Jeremy Seewer crashed hard in the first moto but he rode a strong second moto! He was in fourth place for more than twenty minutes, but he later had to give this up to Cairoli. The 32-year-old Italian dropped back to eighth place, but then came back very strong. The result is a fourth place during this second round for Seewer. Julien Lieber is now tenth, Vanhorebeek finishes thirteenth ahead of Coldenhoff and Strijbos.
This championship will continue in two weeks at the Loket circuit.
