Bizarre results lead to expected winner in AMA MX250 Washougal!
This weekend the ninth round of the championship was contested on the beautiful Washougal course. The course in Washington State on the west coast of America always provides beautiful images due to its location among the tall conifers.
But would the AMA 250 Motocross race in Washougal also provide a great race? In the first moto it was the Kawasaki duo: Joey Savatgy and Austin Forkner who were already in the best position at the starting gate. The holeshot award went to Joey Savatgy.
Even in the first round we saw the Frenchman Dylan Ferrandis, who wanted to quickly get to the top five, get himself into trouble. The Yamaha pilot fell and lost many places and immediately the chance for a good result.
Meanwhile, things were going well at the front, after a few laps we got the foursome; Savatgy, Forkner, Smith and Plessinger at the front with barely two seconds separating them.
The battle at the front remained intense, and for a moment it was Plessinger who had to let his three predecessors go. Among these three predecessors, it was Austin Forkner who managed to pass his teammate Joey Savatgy. For a moment, Jordan Smith also seemed to be tackling the veteran Joey Savatgy. But the Pro Circuit Kawasaki pilot managed to recover so that this did not happen. After a short breather, Joey Savatgy even looked for victory in the last five minutes of the match. After briefly pressing his teammate Austin Forkner, Joey Savatgy saw a shorter line on the inside that took him past Austin Forkner in a clean yet aggressive manner. Joey Savatgy kept his cool in the final laps and won his first moto of the season ahead of his young teammate Austin Forkner and Jordan Smith. Championship leader Aaron Plessinger finished in fourth place, ahead of Chase Sexton and well ahead of his first challenger in the championship, Alex Martin who only finished eighth. Dylan Ferrandis ultimately finished eleventh in this first heat.
The second round, in which it was no Kawasaki motorcycles, but Yamahas that came out on top from behind the starting gate. Aaron Plessinger managed to take the holeshot ahead of his teammates Colt Nicholls and Dylan Ferrandis. However, from behind them came the big danger in the form of Troy Lee Designs KTM pilot who, by keeping the speed up perfectly in the first corners, quickly managed to pass everyone and thus took the lead in the race.
The triumphants of the first round had less luck in this second round. For example, at the first timekeeping we saw that the heat winner of the first series, Joey Savatgy, was outside the top twenty and for the Pro Circuit team things went from bad to much worse when Austin Forkner crashed hard in the second lap. in case of a failed attempt at a scrub. Not on a Pro Circuit bike but also “bad luck” for Jordan Smith who even found himself outside the top thirty at the first timekeeping!
Shane McElrath no longer had to take these competitors into account, and neither did the others. Because the KTM pilot showed himself too strong and won by a margin. This was twelve seconds ahead of Dylan Ferrandis, who punished a mistake by Aaron Plessinger by depriving him of second place. Aaron Plessinger did finish third. Due to the very irregular results of everyone, this was enough for the overall victory. Aaron Plessinger's fourth and third place were enough to win the AMA 250 National of Washougal, ahead of Shane McElrath, who finished ninth in the first heat and now managed to win the heat. Both were accompanied by Joey Savatgy, who managed to fight his way to ninth place from his hopeless situation in this second moto. Dylan Ferrandis narrowly missed the podium and Alex Martin, with an eighth and sixth place, again gives a lot of points to day triumphant and also championship leader Aaron Plessinger.
