Marvin Musquin hits double in Red Bud!
Arriving at the seventh round of the AMA Motocross Championship, the men in the 450cc class continued to battle for the title! They did this on the course that will be held this year as well as the “Motocross des Nations”. A good test for the American pilots, but also for the French or gentlemen like Ken Roczen and Jake Nicholls, who came there for the occasion!
In the first round, the large crowd got to see a holeshot from Blake Baggett. The KTM pilot took the lead ahead of Lorenzo Locurcio and Eli Tomac. However, a mistake by Locurcio and a crash by Blake Baggett soon gave Eli Tomac the lead. The Kawasaki pilot immediately put pressure on the opposition and managed to run away from the competition with fast lap times. This competition was mainly Ken Roczen, as other names such as Marvin Musquin and Justin Barcia were both involved in a first corner crash. The match basically continued quietly, Marvin Musquin worked to save as many points as possible from Eli Tomac and that brought him to third place, behind Eli Tomac and Ken Roczen. But then the match event of the day happened. With three laps to go, we saw Eli Tomac broken down on the sidelines, with a locked rear wheel. This problem threw Eli Tomac out of the race, giving Ken Roczen the win. This was also a blessing in disguise for Marvin Musquin who did not lose any points to his competitor but did make up about 22 points! Both Europeans finished ahead of Benny Bloss, who in turn held off Justin Barcia, who had started. The top five was completed by Blake Baggett.
With only a ten point lead in the championship, Eli Tomac started the second round. In this second moto it was Justin Bogle who took the holeshot. However, the Joe Gibbs Racing pilot was outpaced after just a few laps by Marvin Musquin and Ken Roczen, who fought each other in a hard duel. It was Marvin Musquin who ultimately prevailed and took the lead in the race and managed to drive to victory ahead of Justin Barcia who had found a way past Ken Roczen. And what about Eli Tomac?! Due to his “Did not finish” in the first heat, the championship leader had to start from gate 36, his result in heat one. This led to a poor start for Eli Tomac and a dramatic, somewhat clumsy sequence. The Monster Energy pilot showed his enormous speed by quickly driving to sixth place, but then the American crashed. This caused a loss of space and to make matters worse, a pit stop was also necessary for the Kawasaki pilot. After this pit stop we eventually saw Eli Tomac finish ninth from around twelfth place. Not enough to save his leading position in the championship, which is now held by Marvin Musquin with a 3-point lead.
This Marvin Musquin also won the overall with his second place in the first moto and his victory in the second moto. This for Ken Roczen (1-3) and Justin Barcia (4-2). Jake Nicholls scored a nice tenth place overall with a ninth place and a thirteenth place and Eli Tomac (36-9) in a fifteenth place overall.
