VLM Genk: Grobben holds off Vermijl and Damiaens
Freed from his blood problems, Cedric Grobben is the man to beat when he is at the start in a VLM race. During the 8th championship round in Genk, the SHR Motorsports / Bagger Paul driver took full advantage, but he had to go all out every time!
It is no coincidence that the first three riders during the timed training - Grobben, Damiaens and Vermijk - also set the tone in the heats. Cedric Grobben led from start to finish, but Thomas Vermijl did his best to maintain the lead. Damiaens, who started outside the top 5, came back to third. Championship leader Jens Van Meer also had a bad start. The BeTeMo leader rode strongly forward, but had to deal with a stone that got wedged between the chain. Jens was able to continue his race and finished 16th.
The second heat produced a nice duel between Grobben and Damiaens. Once again Cedric was in the lead and now Dietger also had a better start. Both KTM riders set almost identical lap times from the third lap onwards. Damiaens did everything he could to outpace Grobben, but was stranded at 0,8 seconds! Thomas Vermile now finished third.
Kevin Van Geldrop just missed the podium today, but he does take second place in the championship from Kenny Janssens.
Unfortunately, Dieter Vromans was absent from the 250cc due to health problems and poor blood values. Jonathan Banken did have a major opponent in the person of GP rider Hardi Roosiorg. In the first heat Roosiorg matched Banken and he did so again in the restart. The Sahkar KTM rider finished sixth overall each time. EMX125 pilot Wannes Van de Voorde would normally have ridden in his own region at the Fort of Koningshooikt, but due to the cancellation there, the F4E Racing rider went to the Horensbergdam. Wannes finished fifth twice and was fourth in the 250cc final standings.
