Strong performance from Covington and Olsen in Ottobiano.
Thomas Covington and Thomas Kjer Olsen performed strongly in the eleventh round of the MX2 World Championship in Ottobiano, Italy. Covington won the first moto and after finishing fourth in the second moto, he took second place on the podium. Thomas Kjer Olsen came back to fifth place after a bad start in the first moto. In the second moto he managed to convert a better start into a good second place.
Covington continued his good form of recent weeks on Saturday. He convincingly won the qualifying heat and started from pole position on Sunday. In the first moto he got a good start and immediately started to put pressure on the leader. He struck in the middle of the race and took over the lead. In the scorching conditions, Covington rode tightly and consistently and won the heat by five seconds. Thomas Kjer Olsen also rode a strong first heat. He fought his way through the field and finished fifth.
In the second moto, Covington again got a perfect start and immediately rode into the top three. During the race he had to give up second place to Olsen, who managed to hold this position until the finish. Covington crossed the finish line in fourth place, moving up from eighth to sixth place in the standings. Olsen remains in third place after this Grand Prix. The next Grand Prix will be held in Indonesia in two weeks.
Commentary Thomas Covington: “That was a very good weekend for me, it started well by winning the qualifying heat. I knew the conditions would be tough but in the first moto I had a really good flow on the track. In the first half of the race I followed Prado and then managed to pass him. Then I managed to open a gap and win the heat. In the second heat I had a hard time riding the high pace, so I wasted too much energy. I'm happy to have taken my second consecutive podium and I'm looking forward to the next competition.”
Commentary Thomas Kjer Olsen: “I'm happy with how things went today. In the first moto I didn't have a good start so I had to do a lot of work to get to the front. Still, I managed to come back to fifth place. I wanted more in the second moto and I managed to get a better start. I managed to pass my teammate Covington and finished second. I am satisfied with my riding and the result, I felt strong today.”
