Podium De Wolf and Smulders in Youth ONK Borculo
Kay de Wolf and Scott Smulders of the Beursfoon KTM team finished on the podium in the Open Dutch Championship 85cc big wheels in Borculo.
After two falls, Wolf finished third in the first moto but took revenge in the second moto by crossing the finish line as the winner, placing him second in the daily rankings. Scott Smulders was allowed to climb the third podium step in Borculo with a 2-3 in the heats. Sem Beijer managed to take a top ten place and Milan Beijer finished ninth in the 65cc large wheels.
Kay de Wolf felt well at home on the fast, technical circuit of Borculo. He took pole position in training and was the first to pick a place behind the starting gate in both heats. In the first moto Kay took the holeshot on his Eurol-lubricated KTM machine and immediately set a high pace. In the middle of the race he had already managed to build up a lead of six seconds until he fell briefly. This cost him the leading position, but in the following laps he managed to close the gap to the leader. Both riders went wheel to wheel around the circuit and fought for the win in the first heat. The fight was decided when the leader braked hard before a bend, causing Kay to hit his rear wheel and fall. As a result, he also lost second place and finished third.
In the second moto the rider supported by HGS took the lead from start to finish and won the moto. With a 3-1 in the heats, the rider from Eersel finished in second place in the daily rankings.
Scott Smulders' shoulder injury is going in the right direction, allowing him to participate in Borculo. Things went well in training and he managed to set his fastest time in the fourth lap. In the first moto Scott got a good start and was able to start the race in fourth. He immediately attacked the third man and managed to take over third place with a good rhythm. Driving neatly, he moved up one position during the race and crossed the finish line in second. In the second moto Scott failed to find a good rhythm. He did manage to work his way up from fourth place to third place, but that was as far as he could get. With a 2-3 in the heats, Scott finished in a respectable third place in the overall standings.
Sem Beijer had difficulty finding the right rhythm on the fast circuit during training. Despite frantic attempts to set a fast time, he only managed a fourteenth fastest time. In the first moto he rode a strong catch-up race and came from twentieth place all the way back to tenth position. In the second moto he had to brake hard at the start of the Moto Master to avoid a fallen rider. This meant that he only reached a 22th place to start the match. In all his haste to gain time and places, he crashed again during the first lap, which forced him to start an advance from thirtieth place. All brakes went off in the second heat and Sem managed to put many riders back one place. Tired of fighting, he crossed the finish line in sixteenth place after a heat in which he had given everything.
Milan Beijer trained eleventh in the 65cc big wheels. A bad start meant that he had to catch up in the first moto. He did everything he could to get to the front and managed to come back to tenth place. The start of the second heat was better, allowing him to immediately follow the higher pace of his predecessors. This ensured that he crossed the finish line in eighth place and finished ninth in the day's results.
This weekend Kay de Wolf and Scott Smulders will start in the fourth qualifying round of the European Championship in Sverepec, Slovakia.
