Nancy van de Ven wins Grand Prix ladies in Italy!
Nancy van de Ven of the No Fear Yamaha team has won the fourth race of the women's world championship in Ottobiano, Italy. Van de Ven fought well for victory in the first heat, but was just unable to make the difference and finished third. In the second moto she managed to get back to the front after a mediocre start and ended the moto winning.
After a difficult start to the season due to her serious leg injury, van de Ven finally had a good feeling while driving again. Although this was not yet fully reflected in her fifth fastest time in timed practice, she left the circuit with confidence and started to prepare for the first heat.
In the first heat she chose a position on the inside behind the starting gate. She didn't get away very well, but in the first few corners she made up many places and advanced to the leading group. She soon found herself in third place and started to put pressure on the two leading ladies. Nancy tried everything to find a place where she could overtake but couldn't find one. This resulted in her being passed in the final phase, but Nancy also made up a position and, exhausted, crossed the finish line in third place.
Considering the fact that she had managed to set the fastest lap time a number of times in the first moto, she went for it in the second moto to win the moto. Her start was a lot less good this time and she only came through the first corner in around tenth place. She immediately started to gain places and managed to take over second place at the beginning of the second round. She then started putting pressure on the leading lady. After a few laps the time had come and Nancy managed to take over the lead with a nice overtaking maneuver. Giving it her all, she managed to open a gap and rode to victory unthreatened.
With a 3-1 in the heats, Nancy took her first Grand Prix victory of this season. In the standings for the world championship she has risen to second place and is 21 points behind the leading lady. In the coming weeks, Nancy will prepare for the Dutch Grand Prix in Assen on September 15 and 16.
