Musquin finds much-needed speed, but Tomac still wins!
After a weekend of rest and therefore 14 days to work on themselves, the pilots came to High Point in Pennsylvania for their fourth race of the championship. The previous three matches, all won by Eli Tomac with double series wins, left only one favorite in High Point. Or could the competition, which until now could never match the speed of the Kawasaki pilot, cause a turnaround?!
The start of the first heat started with a huge pile of meat. A mass crash in which Ken Roczen, Benny Bloss and the fastest man in the time training Blake Baggett were involved. This made it just a little easier for Eli Tomac to take the lead in the race. At first, the 14-day cooling-off period did not seem to have helped the competition in fighting the reigning AMA Motocross champion. But in High Point the Kawasaki pilot did not just ride to victory for free. No, the Frenchman Marvin Musquin, who had already made short work of Justin Barcia at the beginning of the race and relegated him to third place, found a rhythm so scorching just before the middle of the race that he first cleared the deficit to Eli Tomac to drive close. To then speed past the previously unapproachable Kawasaki pilot. Eli Tomac was left without the answer and watched as Marvin Musquin took his first moto win of the season.
In the second moto it was Ken Roczen who took the holeshot! However, the German could not last long in first position. This is due to tendonitis, among other things, which causes his arms to lose feeling during the match. But then there was also Eli Tomac and Marvin Musquin! Eli Tomac, who had taken over the lead from Ken Roczen, came under immense pressure from Marvin Musquin and the cat and mouse game, the game of chess as Eli Tomac himself called it, made for a breathtaking match. Until the last corner, Marvin Musquin tried to pass the Kawasaki pilot, but he had learned from the first heat and had adapted to the opponent. Eli Tomac won the second heat and therefore his fourth overall of the season. Marvin Musquin finished second in the series and also in the overall with the same number of points as Eli Tomac. Ken Roczen finished third in this second heat and that, together with his seventh place from the first heat, puts him at fourth overall, behind Justin Barcia who nicely completed the overall podium with a 3-4 finish alongside Marvin Musquin and Eli Tomac.
