First podium Jago Geerts, victory Thomas Kjer Olsen!
Just like last year, Thomas Kjer Olsen won the Latvian Grand Prix. The Husqvarna rider finished first and second on the Kegums circuit. With this, the rider from Jacky Martens' team wins his second GP! However, the leading role was claimed by Jago Geerts, the rider from Balen took his first GP podium! The Yamaha rider finished fourth and third during the heats, which gave him second place in the daily rankings. Pauls Jonass comes third and remains the leader in the standings.
Despite his inferior qualification, Jonass managed to get off to a very good start. He takes the lead ahead of Kjer Olsen and Henry Jacobi. Hunter Lawrence starts the match well but crashes in the first full lap. The same thing happened to Jorge Prado-Garcia, the Spaniard was in the top five but crashed in the fifth corner and lost a lot of places! At the front, 'TKO' has taken back the lead from Jonass and will not relinquish it to the Dane. Jonass comes in second ahead of Covington. The American chased the sick Jacobi for almost 15 minutes, but managed to pass the German and finished third. Geerts and his teammate Ben Watson also managed to get Jacobi behind them in the second half of the race and the KEMEA tandem finished fourth and fifth respectively. Davy Pootjes is in a good position in the initial phase, but the KTM rider crashes briefly and finishes fifteenth. The best Dutchman is Micha Boy de Waal, the VAM Racing driver finished thirteenth! Not a good first heat for Vandoninck because unfortunately he does not reach the finish.
In the second round, Prado-Garcia manages to secure his 'pole' and wins the FOX Holeshot Award. The rider from Claudio DeCarli's team is followed by Geerts and Watson. Kjer Olsen follows in fourth place ahead of F&H Racing driver Ruben Fernandez-Garcia. The first half of the match is the top four locked and it is Watson who is looking for the key. The Brit tries to pass his teammate and that ensures that Kjer Olsen connects. The former EMX250 champion manages to pass both Yamahas and when leader Prado also makes a mistake it becomes really exciting. Kjer Olsen also tries to win the second round, but Prado wins. Kjer Olsen has to do everything he can to stay ahead of Geerts, but the tall Dane succeeds. Geerts finishes third ahead of Watson and Jonass returns to fifth place. Pootjes is doing better and better, the LRT rider comes in a very good sixth! The same can be said about De Waal, the Brabander remains just outside the top ten with an eleventh place, but he does make an impression!
The FIM MX2 World Championship is back in action next week. During the Pentecost weekend, the German GP will be held on the beautiful Teutschenthal circuit.
