BK Gooik Inters 500: Smooth victory for Glenn Coldenhoff!
Perfect conditions and animated races today for the fifth round of the Belgian Motocross Championships in Gooik. Unfortunately, regional rider and favorite Jeremy Van Horebeek had to fail due to the shoulder injury he sustained in Teutschenthal. Nevertheless, AMC De Toekomst gathered a nice field of participants. KTM factory rider Glenn Coldenhoff (1-1) dominated the BK debates ahead of Shaun Simpson (2-3) and Max Anstie (4-2).
Glenn Coldenhoff was the best in the short training. 'The Hoff' secured pole on the long circuit ahead of Kevin Strijbos and Max Anstie. The surprise of the morning came from local heroes Nick Triest and David Segers. Among the international violence, they qualified 4th and 7th respectively.
Shaun - back from being away - Simpson was the first to dive into the left bend after the start, while Robin Bakens and Yentel Martens were also well along. After the first lap, Coldenhoff emerged as the leader ahead of Simpson, Strijbos, Anstie, Martens and Triest. However, due to a slide at the start-finish, Triest disappeared from the front ranks. Coldenhoff finished a smart race and took his first win of the day. A motivated Kevin Strijbos challenged Simpson and narrowly missed out on second place. The difference between the two former Belgian champions was two thousandths of a second. Anstie, who came back very quickly after a bad start, finished fourth ahead of a strong Yentel Martens, Dietger Damiaens finished seventh.
After his holeshot in the second moto, Glenn Coldenhoff rode unthreatened to victory. Anstie had a better start and quickly moved into second position, but the Rockstar Energy Husqvarna pilot was never able to worry the leader. Simpson now finished third ahead of a good Petart Petrov, while Yentel Martens - who started poorly - was able to hold off Strijbos for fifth place! Although Martens was the best Belgian, the 'regional stars' also performed well. MCLB champion David Segers saw a steady heat rewarded with 7th place, finishing ahead of Triest and Damiaens.
