250cc Gooik: Jago Geerts wins ahead of Micha-Boy De Waal
Unfortunately no Ben Watson, nor Brent Van Doninck in Gooik. Coming man Jago Geerts (1-1) gave his growing army of fans, recognizable by the red #193 T-shirts, but what they came for. A strong Micha-Boy De Waal finished second, but Geerts' teammate Anthony Rodriguez also showed his skills in an exciting final round!
Tallon Verhelst came out on top in the first moto. However, Jago Geerts quickly put things in order. Immediately the Kemea-Yamaha rider pulled hard and opened a gap. In the melee of the initial phase, a handy Micha-Boy De Waal rode to second place. De Waal went looking for leader Geerts and was the fastest man in the race in the second half of the race, while Jago was the first to pass the doubled. In the end, however, Jago steered his Yamaha to victory in a controlled manner and finished a good five seconds ahead of De Waal. The only one who could somewhat keep up with the GP riders was the EMX250 promise Mikkel Haarup (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna), who finished third. Erik Willems, who finished fourth, was the best Belgian with fourth place.
Anyone who thought that Geerts would easily drive to victory in the revival was in for a treat. Leader Haarup was followed by Rodriguez, Kristof Van Vaerenbergh, Jago Geerts and Erik Willems. The Danish Husqvarna pilot was immediately whistled back by Jago, but this time the Kemea substitute from the AMA, Anthony Rodriguez, had also started well. It became a nice joust between the two Yamaha factory riders and “A-Rod” kept the pressure on so that Geerts could not afford to make any mistakes. This time the talented Kempen native won by 1,8 seconds over his stablemate. In the battle for third place, Micha-Boy De Waal had to go deep. After starting in the middle of the field, Micha had to keep chasing until he caught Haarup a few laps from the end. Here too, the differences between three and four were very small.
Erik Willems was again the best Belgian with a nice 5th place, he also stayed ahead of Jumbo No Fear Vamo Honda's Marshal Weltin. Mark Boot, BK leader in the 250, delivered his best performance of the day with an 8th place. Of the VLM guest drivers present, Rob Konings performed the best. He equaled the points total of 10th Tim Louis, but he had a better second heat. Kristof Van Vaerenbergh also made a good impression, “The Stoffel” came second after a supreme Tallon Verhelst.
