WMX: Win for Papenmeier, good start for vd Ven & Verstappen!
This weekend the Women's Motocross World Championship starts in Trentino! For us lowlanders we have to look forward to Nancy van de Ven and Amandine Verstappen. Both contenders for the title, but they are of course not alone and will have to face a lot of opposition if they want to finally crown themselves as “Queen of Motocross”. When we think of opposition, we think of New Zealand's Courtney Duncan, Italy's Kiara Fontanesi and old stalwart Larissa Papenmeier.
The first series in Italy started with a holeshot for Nancy van de Ven. The Dutch woman, who was still recovering from a broken leg, held first place for a few laps, but then had to let Larissa Papenmeier pass. This German saw her chance and checked out to victory. Behind her we saw Nancy van de Ven in second place and Amandine Verstappen in third place. Both women were briefly challenged by Kiara Fontanesi, who even passed for a moment, but then fell back to fourth place. As a result, our Lowland women finished well on the podium in the first series of the World Cup season.
Behind these four women we found multiple champion Steffi Laier in fifth place, ahead of Courtney Duncan who struggled to complete a clear race on the slippery Trentino course.
