VLM: Kevin Van Geldrop and Jens Van Meer divide the loot
After the JMS and classic car competitions on Saturday, all VLM classes came into action today in Ranst. For the Newcomers Open C, Masters, Juniors Open, Nationals Open and Inters Open, this competition organized by the VDS MX Team counted towards the championship. Favorite Jens Van Meer won the overall victory but had to leave the second heat to the surprising Kevin Van Geldrop!
Due to the Belgian Championship competition in Lommel, Yentel Martens and Dietger Damiaens, among others, were missing. Greg Smets will be in action again tomorrow and the day after tomorrow in Orlyonok in the EMX300. In the morning, 26 Inters made their appearance at the Wijnegembaan. A lot less than, for example, in Arendonk where 45 riders were behind the fence. Nevertheless, we immediately drove briskly! Wouter Van Massenhoven set the fastest time ahead of his BeTeMo teammates Dieter Vromans and Jens Van Meer.
What should have been Van Massenhoven's day turned out to be an off-day and a match day like any other for the leader Jens Van Meer! Reigning champion Kenny Janssens also did a good job. Janssens, who finished second and third today, takes over second place in the championship from Wouter Van Massenhoven. In the first moto Kenny even led for a long time until Van Meer put things in order on the penultimate lap. Sven Wouters, who has been consistently performing at a high level in recent weeks, was able to capitalize on his good start with a brilliant fourth place!
It proved that a good start may not be everything but still be a lot Keven Van Geldrop in the second heat. After Janssens' holeshot, Van Geldrop quickly took decisive command. Although Kevin turned in consistent lap times, Van Meer more than stepped up his game in the final. At the finish the difference was barely a second, but Van Geldrop did take his first series victory of the season. “Not again,” Van Massenhoven must have thought because after his overtaking race in the opening race, things went wrong again in the first lap. The sympathetic KTM pilot could now remount to the 7th position.
Although Jonathan Banks (Taxi Marcel) once again won the two heats, he still felt the hot breath of it in the revival Jelle Verbruggen on his neck. Jelle pulled off a great series and almost constantly kept pace with Banken. He finished fifth overall, just behind the fast Waal, and second quarter-liter pilot.
Also the 18 year old Brent Arden made an impression. Brent didn't have the best training time but did well in the first moto and finished eighth overall and became second MX2 rider. Thanks to a 3rd place in the second round, the MC De Stroeckxvrienden rider was able to take second place on the final podium! In the standings of the 250, Verbruggen overtakes Vromans. Since Kristof Scheynen just 3 points behind, the battle for silver is far from over! Man in form Brent Aerden is now fifth.
