MXGP: Jeffrey Herlings wipes the floor with Antonio Cairoli
After Jeffrey Herlings regained the “Red Plate” from his major competitor Antonio Cairoli in the previous Grand Prix of Trentino. We had to wait and see whether the Italian could come up with a counter move on one of his favorite tracks during the Portuguese Grand Prix in Agueda. Or should we prepare for a new blow that would be delivered by Jeffrey Herlings?!
The latter happened, the Dutchman won both heats in Portugal and with great ease! In the first heat, his major competitor Antonio Cairoli had to fight back from seventh place. In the hunt to save as many points as possible, the Sicilian failed, also helped by the retirement of Clément Desalle, to finish in a good second place. This for Tim Gajser and the two Frenchmen Gautier Paulin and Romain Febvre. Behind this fivesome we found the lowlanders Jeremy Van Horebeek and Glenn Coldenhoff. Julien Lieber finished in tenth place. The other lowlanders finished outside the points in this first heat.
In the second moto Antonio Cairoli started excellently, taking advantage of his good reaction at the starting gate and immediately cutting off the line of his arch-enemy Jeffrey Herlings. It is clear that the Dutchman was not pleased with this and he did not allow himself to be misled by it. Before the end of the first lap, the championship leader relegated the tricky Italian to second place. The Sicilian would eventually finish there ahead of Clément Desalle, Romain Febvre and Tim Gajser. Once again we found a lowlander behind this five with Glenn Coldenhoff. Jeremy Van Horebeek finished eighth. Kevin Strijbos took revenge on himself with an impressive twelfth place in this second moto, after a disappointing first moto. Julien Lieber in turn finished in eighteenth place. And what about Gautier Paulin? The fourth in the first round had to abandon the fight in the first round.
It goes without saying that Jeffrey Herlings wins the Grand Prix in Portugal by claiming the maximum 50 points. This for Antonio Cairoli with 44 points and Tim Gajser with 36 points. In the World Championship, Jeffrey Herlings has a 16 point bonus over his closest pursuer Antonio Cairoli.
