Mathias Van Hoof on stage in Binche!
Last weekend the 2nd round of the Belgian enduro championship took place in Binche. After a disappointing first round in Mettet two weeks ago, Beta-Denicol rider Mathias Van Hoof hoped for a better result. With a nice third he immediately reached the podium of the Inters E3 class after Kevin Gauniaux and Wim Vanderheyden.
“Mettet really hit hard for me. I hurt my knee and could barely drive, the result was really bad and I hoped for better here in Binche. During the reconnaissance on Saturday the 2 tests looked good and we were looking forward to the competition on Sunday.” Last weekend, 6 short laps of 17 km including 2 specials had to be driven. The competition started well for Mathias and after the 1st round he finished in 2nd place in the E3 rankings and 12th in scratch.
“I had explored well and that resulted in a good 1st round. The 2nd round went wrong in special 4 and immediately lost a few places. Everyone is very close together and there is a lot of tension. The downside to this is that each a small mistake is severely punished with an immediate drop of a few places in the rankings.”
The times remained constant throughout the day and the Beta-Denicol rider continued to compete in the top 5. Going into the final lap, the difference between 13th and 17th place was barely 11 seconds, so a lot could still happen. “I knew I couldn't make any mistakes in the last 2 tests because it was so close together. However, in the last test I was surprised by a stone; This resulted in a small slide and a loss of a few seconds. After the finish I noticed that in that last test I lost 3 places in the scratch and 1 place in the E3 classification due to a small mistake. I was really disappointed by this, top 15 scratch and 2nd in E3 would have been nice, especially after such a bad race in Mettet. There are a few things that need to be improved and then I am sure that the top 15 is achievable! '
Ultimately, Mathias finished on the podium in the E2 class with a 3rd place during his 3nd race in the Inter class. He finished 17th in the general classification, also known as the scratch. Next weekend the 3rd round for the Bk is scheduled for Douzy, France.
Anoine Magain won the scratch in Binche ahead of Matthew Vanoevelen and Cédric Cremer. Jilani Cambré finished sixth.
