First European top 10 for Wannes Van de Voorde!
Despite an excellent winter and great performances in the first ONK competitions, things did not go as hoped for Wannes Van de Voorde in recent weeks. In Arco di Trento, the Belgian Beloften champion turned the tide with strong starts and a nice 9de place in the 2nd series. Mario Lucas and Kjell Verbruggen did not perform enough, especially considering their speed.
Because no fewer than 80(!) drivers had traveled to Pietramurata, the F4E Racing drivers had to qualify first. Both Lucas, 6th in his group, Verbruggen, who finished 13th, and Van de Voorde, who set the 17th fastest time, managed to qualify directly.
For the first race, the riders had to work on a surprisingly tough track. Due to the rain last week, there were more tracks than usual. This time Wannes got the best start of the year F4E Racing trio. The Denicol rider started his race just outside the top 5. Overwhelmed by the circumstances, 'Wanny' soon had to deal with sore arms. Van de Voorde was therefore unable to finish his match properly and finished on a disappointing 27th position.
Verbruggen and Lucas weren't doing well on Saturday either. They both had to come back from the back after a bad start. Mario, who started the EMX125 season with a podium finish in Valkenswaard, would score another point. Rookie Kjell Verbruggen finished 33th outside the points. After sustaining a minor calf muscle injury in the morning, Kjell did everything necessary in the evening to be as fit as possible at the start the next day.
For Van de Voorde, the analysis of the first day immediately yielded benefits. Once again the F4E Racing driver sent his KTM 125SX to a cannon start! After he was 7de had started, Wannes barely had to give up two places. As a reward for a smart and consistent match, he finished 9thde across the finish line. Immediately the first European top 10 for the 15-year-old rider from Sint-Katelijne Waver. Lucas missed his start again in the restart. Despite a fall after five laps, the young Spaniard clearly found a better rhythm. Mario came like 11de within less than 2 seconds of Wannes. Kjell had an unlucky race, but impressed with his speed in the final phase. Without complexity, the talent from Boxtel equaled the lap times of the top 5. Unfortunately, that was not enough to score points.
In a month's time the EMX125 championship will continue in Kegums, Latvia.
Wannes Van de Voorde: “Somewhat to my own surprise, I got a very good start in the first moto. I performed well in the first laps, but I had handled it a bit wrong. I started to drive with cramps, which quickly gave me very sore arms. Because I could no longer hold the bike properly, I eventually fell back sharply. Although I had to start more from the outside for the second moto, I had another great start. After that I just calmly rode my own race. I didn't look at the others and just did my thing. Of course I'm very pleased that it worked out and that I could correct my mistake from Saturday. We keep learning!”
Kjell Verbruggen: “In the free practice I was riding behind a rider who suddenly stopped on a double, then I stepped on the brakes so hard that I got a severe cramp in my calf muscle. All in all, I was still happy with my 13de place in the time training. In the first moto my sore calf really bothered me and the lap times weren't great either. In the second moto I hit another rider at the start and I had to stop in the second corner to avoid fallen riders. Then the riding got better and better, I was in the top 20 when I fell, which caused me to lose a lot of places. The fact that I was able to set strong lap times at the end was positive. In any case, it shows that the speed is there.”
Mario Lucas: “On Saturday the timed training went quite well. I was 6th in my group. In the first race I started very badly. In the first half of the race I drove from 25 to 20 but I had very little feeling for the circuit. Which caused me to lose some places. On Sunday I had a bad start again, but my riding was better and I was back in the top 15. After a few laps I tried to catch up with Benistant and Hofer, but I fell. Then I turned 18de I was knocked back a spot, so I came back to 11 a second timede place. Certainly in the second heat there could have been a lot more.”
