Chareyre wins the first race of the European Supermoto Championship in Ottobiano
TM Factory Racing rider and multiple World Champion Thomas Chareyre has triumphantly won the opening race of the European Supermoto Championship in Ottobiano (Italy). Second in the final results was Pavel Kejmar and German rider Markus Class completed the podium in the S1 class.
From the first free practice on Saturday, Chareyre was the fastest of the entire field. The Frenchman also showed in the timed training that he would really be the man to beat this weekend. Second in the timed training was Mauno Hermunen, who is back in Supermoto with the Italian SWM after a two-year absence. The third fastest time was ultimately set by Pavel Kejmar on TM.
In the first race it seemed to be exciting when Hermunen took the holeshot ahead of Chareyre, Class and Kejmar, among others. A lot is expected of Hermunen this season, but Chareyre took over the lead from Hermunen on the long start/finish straight in the next round. Chareyre quickly built up a lead that he did not relinquish until the checkered flag. Shortly after Chareyre had passed Hermunen, the Finn also saw Pavel Kejmar pass him by. Hermunen tried to get the most out of his SWM, but a mistake ultimately set him back to eighth place in the first race. Kejmar and Class battled it out until the final round. However, the Czech made no mistakes and managed to keep the door closed so that Class had to settle for third place.
The holeshot in the second race was Thomas Chareyre and right from the start the Frenchman set the pace so high that the rest were left behind. Hermunen came through the first round in second place, with Markus Class and Pavel Kejmar right behind him, who quickly managed to get to the front after an inferior position. At the end of the second round, Class passed Hermunen from a genuine block pass. The Finn had to put his money where his mouth is and swerve to avoid a crash. This created a gap for Kejmar, who didn't think twice and took over third place from Hermunen, who was now fourth, just ahead of his teammate Edgardo Borella. Pavel Kejmar had his sights set on second place and quickly implemented his plans. In off-road he managed to take second place from Class. In the meantime, Hermunen had already reached the rear wheel of Class. Hermunen took full advantage of a mistake by his German rival and took back third place. Borella also makes good use of Class's mistake and moves up to fourth place. Chareyre had already disappeared from sight and took it easy until the finish. Kejmar still had to battle with Hermunen, who showed that he was still fast. The Finn tried in all kinds of ways, but Kejmar managed to hold on to second place, meaning Hermunen had to settle for third place. Markus Class eventually managed to finish fourth ahead of Borella.
With two victories, Thomas Chareyre was also the final victor. Chareyre was joined on the podium by Pavel Kejmar and Markus Class in second and third place respectively.
