Positive Dutch Masters opener for De Waal and Weltin.
Both the Dutch and many foreign top riders were at the start in Markelo yesterday for the first race of the Dutch Masters of Motocross in Markelo. For Jumbo No Fear Vamo Honda riders Micha Boy De Waal and Marshal Weltin it was a successful dress rehearsal for the GP of Valkenswaard this weekend. Weltin finished 9th in the final standings, De Waal was 11th.
In the 250 class, no fewer than 15 GP drivers came to Circuit 'de Herikerberg'. In the morning, no fewer than 56 riders competed for the best qualifying time and a starting place in both heats. Micha Boy De Waal immediately set a good 6th fastest time.
However, at the start of the first heat things went dramatically wrong for De Waal, who suffered a spectacular failure. Fortunately without any serious physical problems. With a 'crooked' engine and quite behind the rest of the field, the No Fear Energy rider started a catch-up race as the very last. Micha stuck to his well-known style and managed to achieve a 20th place and a championship point. The second race did go according to plan. De Waal got off to a good start and completed an excellent round in the wake of the GP toppers. The driver from Veen crossed the line in 5th place, a few seconds behind Vsevelod Brylyakov.
Marshal Weltin did not perform as well in the timed training in which he qualified 30th. As a result, the young American appeared at a serious disadvantage at the start of the first race. From position 35, Marshal steered his CRF250R like a proverbial knife through butter. He would still finish 14th. In the second moto Weltin was able to capitalize on his better starting position, on the inside of the second row. After a start outside the top 10, the Jumbo No Fear Vamo Honda pilot entered a duel with the established GP values. Marshal held up well and finished 7th.
The second race of the Dutch Masters of Motocross will be held in Oldebroek on Easter Monday, April 2.
Team manager Steven Vandeweyer: “Overall it was a very positive day for us. Micha had an unfortunate fall in the first race, but he always made an eager impression. His speed also confirmed all the good things we have already seen from him in training. That top-5 finish in the second race in such a strong field of participants was the crowning achievement. During the day both riders managed to refine their settings, but it is clear that we have an excellent technical basis with the new Honda CRF250R. Marshal was penalized for his inferior qualifying time. Yet he showed in both heats how much progress he has made on sandy tracks. The second heat was very neat. Weltin hardly had to give up ground on some of the top players. As a result, we look forward to the Valkenswaard GP this weekend with confidence.”
