MXGP: Cairoli wins his first GP of the season in Redsand!
Spain had something unique in store for us for 2018! Because for the first time this MXGP season, Jeffrey Herlings did not come out on top! His teammate Antonio Cairoli outsmarted him in Redsand and managed to win both heats.
In the first heat, both title contenders did not get off to a strong start. However, it was Antonio Cairoli who was able to push him past his competitors faster. The Italian was thus able to position himself in first place after eight laps, after a long duel with Romain Febvre! The same Romain Febvre then killed the advancing Jeffrey Herlings, it took the Dutchman until four laps from the end before he could take second place from Romain Febvre. Too late to ride to Antonio Cairoli, the Sicilian bird had flown in this first heat. Jeffrey Herlings had to be satisfied with second place ahead of Romain Febvre. Belgian Clément Desalle finished fourth ahead of his team, and fellow countryman Julien Lieber! Jeremy Van Horebeek finished in tenth place after his hit in Valkenswaard.

The second round started, with a holeshot from Antonio Cairoli! But there was also some commotion at the start because first Jeffrey Herlings was boxed in, and then the young Dutchman made a donut with his motorcycle. That left him in eleventh place after two laps. He had a long hunt to catch up. While The Bullit started his catch-up hunt, we saw a short and fun duel between AC222 and Gautier Paulin at the front of the race. The Frenchman briefly took over the lead, but after a few laps he had to hand it back to the Sicilian. Jeffrey Herlings, who in the meantime had already eaten Tim Gajser, Romain Febvre, Clément Desalle and many others in his pursuit. One lap after Antonio Cairoli also defeated Gautier Paulin. As a result, the Frenchman fell back to third place. Jeffrey Herlings was still hunting for Tony Cairoli, of the eight-second lead there was barely one and a half left at the finish, but once again the Dutchman arrived a fraction too late to keep the nine-time world champion, Cairoli, from victory. Gautier Paulin finished third, ahead of Clément Desalle who battled it out for the entire race with Romain Febvre finishing in fifth place. The Lowlanders; Glenn Coldenhoff, Jeremy Van Horebeek and Julien Lieber finished in places seven, eight and nine respectively.
