BNC: Vieillevoye wins the BeNeCup Supermoto in Mettet.
Mettet 11-03-2018. Last weekend, the first race of the 2018 BeNeCup Supermoto championship was held at the Circuit Jules Tacheney in Mettet, Belgium. With 184 participants, the event was a huge success and proof that the Supermoto sport is on its way back. In the fast Inters/Prestige class, it was the 2017 champion Kevin Vieillevoye who took the overall victory in Mettet.
Inters/Prestige
With an international field of participants at the start in Mettet, it was important for all drivers to achieve the best possible time in qualifying, especially with the wet weather conditions on the circuit. In lap five, Kevin Vieillevoye managed to set the fastest time, followed by Devon Vermeulen at just 0.020 seconds. The third fastest time was set by young Belgian Romain Kaivers.
At the start of the first race it was Ashley Barber who took the holeshot on his KTM, but the Dutchman Devon Vermeulen soon managed to take the lead. With Vermeulen in the lead, Kevin Vieillevoye knew he could not lose the connection and a few corners later he also passed Barber and moved up to second place. Romain Kaivers had also ended up behind the English Belgian and quickly took over third place. Vermeulen and Viellevoye managed to pull away from the rest of the field together and the former champions made it an exciting battle to the finish. With a lead of 0.166 seconds, Vermeulen took the victory ahead of Vieillevoye, who just had to settle for second place. Third place was Romain Kaivers who had a lonely race. Ashley Barber finished fourth followed by Belgian Jean-Marc Gaillard who completed the top five.
The holeshot of race two went to Kevin Vieillevoye, who benefited from the worse starts of Vermeulen and Kaivers. After the first passage, Vieillevoye had already opened up a gap to Gaillard who was in second place. After a few laps, Vermeulen managed to take over second place and was able to start his catch-up race. Kaivers also managed to recover quickly and was soon in third place behind Vermeulen. Behind the top three, it was Barber, Gaillard and Sebastian Bouillon who were battling it out for fourth place. The fight for victory became increasingly exciting. Lap after lap, Vermeulen managed to reduce the gap and with three laps to go the Dutchman ended up on the rear wheel of Vieillevoye. With two laps to go, Vermeulen tried to take over first place in one of the off-road sections but came out just wrong, causing him to crash. This paved the way for Vieillevoye to take the win. Vermeulen ultimately had to settle for sixth place after his fall. Romain Kaivers took second place in the second race ahead of Ashley Barber. With his victory, Kevin Vieillevoye also took the overall victory in the Inters/Prestige class ahead of Kaivers and Vermeulen.
Euro class
In the Euro class, victory went to the young Belgian rider Louis Capone who won both races. Second place in the overall standings went to Romeo Fiorentino followed by Francois Corman who completed the podium.
National class
The largest class in Mettet was the National class, which was held in two groups. The A class with the fastest drivers was won by Cedric Schmidt with a fifth and first place in the races. Second place went to David Detaille, followed by Kevin Meyan who claimed third place. The B class was won by Christophe Lankriet followed by the Dutchman Willen Dijkstra and Joachim Moreels.
Quad class
Two groups of Quads were again at the start in Mettet. This spectacular class was won by Christian Mohring, followed by Maxim Cluydts and Romain Peschon.
At the end of the long racing day, the Super Final was held. In the Superfinal, the fastest riders from each class start in a large group. At the start of the Super Final, things went wrong for Thieu Tausch, who could no longer avoid the stalled Louis Capone and fell hard. At the restart it was Kevin Vieillevoye and Romain Kaivers who immediately took off and were not seen again by the rest of the field. From start to finish, the two fast Belgians fought for victory. At the finish it was Vieillevoye who took first place with a lead of 0.186 seconds ahead of Romain Kaivers. At 45 seconds behind, Ashley Barber finished third.
