EMX: Greg Smets won't let himself be stopped.
If there is an organization in the Netherlands that can deal with snow during the competition, it is the one in Valkenswaard. The people next to the circuit were very well bundled up against the fresh wind and they thought back to the Christmas Cross. An event that was held on the Eurocircuit for many years. This weekend the European 300cc Championship starts and Greg Smets won the first round. The son of Joel Smets won with a 17 second lead over Mike Kras. Third place went to reigning champion Brad Anderson.
From pole position, Kras enters the first corner as the leader with his teammate James Dunn next to him. Smets follows in fourth place ahead of Anderson and Sven Te Dorsthorst. At the end of the first lap, Kras already has a lead of more than two seconds, but one lap later Smets is the new leader. The third man Dunn is already seven seconds behind the leader. At first Kras does not want to give in and after about ten minutes of the match he briefly takes back the lead. Smets doesn't let that happen, he comes back into the lead at the rubbish dump. When Kras gets into trouble a little later due to a straggler, Smets is 'safe' and the rider from Dessel wins the first round. Kras comes second ahead of Anderson, who has already passed compatriot Dunn in the third laps. Tom Meijer has been in fifth place for a long time, but in the final phase Matthias Plessers manages to take over.
