BK Moerbeke: Siliën steals Damiaen's victory
In Moerbeke-Waas, the Belgian Motocross Championship today looked for the successors of Dietger Damiaens (MX1) and (Mark Boot). Although the circuit was in almost perfect condition yesterday, the heavy rain last night made for a tough cross. Thanks to a win in the second race, Roy Silliën took the Inters 500 victory from Dietger Damiaens (1-2). In the sidecars, Marvin Vanluchene/Ben Van Den Bogaart won ahead of the Vermak brothers.
As was to be feared, the turnout in the Inters categories was very low. In the 500 race, 26 riders started across the four classes (Inters/Nationals/Seniors/Juniors). Poleman Dietger Damiaens did not let it bother him. In the first heat he overtook Roy Silliën and crossed the line with an almost three second lead. Gordano Natale finished third by a wide distance, while Jochem Walckiers – 4th overall – was the fastest nationally.
Siliën quickly took the lead in the drier restart and would not relinquish the lead. Damiaens was 4th away, but a mistake in the 4th lap cost him dearly. Although he came up strong in the final phase, Dietger ultimately had to bow to Siliën. At the Nationals, Walckiers now finished 2nd after teammate Benonit. After his third place in the second club cross of RES Axel, Jochem took the overall victory ahead of Benonit and Dylan Mayné.
In MX2, former Endurope winner Daymond Martens stood out. The Yamaha rider with number 23 easily won the first heat ahead of Mark Boot. However, the reigning MX2 champion took hold and now finished 3,6 seconds behind Martens. Tim Louis, last year's MX2 revelation, was the third Inter (5-3) to join the podium. Regional rider Tallon Verhelst showed that he is in good shape one week before Valkenswaard. Tallon won both 250 heats at the Nationals with a great display of power after setting the second fastest time overall in the very muddy time training in the morning.
