MXGP: Cairoli wins qualifying in Argentina!
Antonio Cairoli immediately put everyone on edge! If anyone had any doubts, the old Italian is one, if not the biggest candidate to succeed himself as world champion. He immediately showed this by easily winning the qualifying match in Neuquen, Argentina. He took the holeshot and checked out of the opposition.
This opposition, including a whole series of Belgians, fared well, but not well enough to challenge the Italian boss. Clément Desalle was the second man in pursuit for a few laps, but at the end of the race he had to let fellow countryman Jeremy Van Horebeek pass him. We saw two lowlanders in the top three.
Behind these two we saw bickering and messing between Julien Lieber, Romain Febvre, Jeremy Seewer, and Jeffrey Herlings, among others. The latter came out of the starting blocks second, but the Dutchman did not immediately find the rhythm and dropped back into the field for a while, only to make some progress again and eventually fall back to seventh place. Meanwhile, Julien Lieber, who had started like a rocket and had only just returned to fitness, had also dropped to tenth place.
For fourth and fifth place it was a battle between Max Anstie, who started ninth and tenth, and Shaun Simpson and Romain Febvre. In the end it was Romain Febvre who came out on top ahead of Shaun Simpson and Max Anstie. As already mentioned, Jeffrey Herlings finished seventh behind them, ahead of Jeremy Seewer and Gautier Paulin and Julien Lieber finished in tenth place.
