VLM Helchteren: Countdown with Kenny Janssens
Anyone who tipped Kenny Janssens (32) as VLM's Inters MX1 champion last year can almost call themselves clairvoyant. Because number one now provides certain privileges, we are looking forward to the start of the season next weekend in Helchteren together with the reigning champion!
However, the circumstances in which the Racing Center KTM pilot now starts the season are completely different from last year. “To be honest, those first matches last season did not deliver what we expected. The first crosses were simply disappointing.” Kenny kicks off. Janssens had recently switched to the KTM 450 and the adjustment did not go smoothly. “Ultimately the breakthrough came after we opted for the suspension Shock therapy had gone to the Netherlands. From then on, in Arendonk, the change started. I continued that positive trend for the rest of the season.”
Against all expectations, Janssens eventually took the title. He wanted to maintain the good form he had as much as possible. “My preparation for this season is similar to last year. I have again with Ricky Nijs from Rocky's Gym. I haven't really been quiet. I just continued to train, but a little less intensively of course. Between Christmas and New Year I went to Spain with some comrades to be able to ride in good conditions. After that I was in Dunkirk almost every weekend.” Almost because he had to skip one weekend due to a cycling accident during training. However, physically he is on track.
“Okay, some riders will really aim for that opening race. Of course it's nice if you can win straight away, but the prizes are only handed out at the finish! You also don't know who else is coming from guest drivers. Men from the BMB or other federations, international riders perhaps. I don't feel pressure because I start as a champion. Maybe I'll ride with less pressure, because they won't take away the title I already have!”
In any case, in 2017 Kenny showed how versatile and regular he is as a rider. Anyone who may have underestimated him in the past will probably no longer make the same mistake. He himself starts with some additional assets. After all, he has now been perfectly adapted to his SX-F450 and he has plenty of experience. “During training I already feel that I can handle a 30-minute heat well, but a race is of course different. What I do notice as I get older is that the explosiveness has dulled somewhat. But that's normal, right? I don't really have any additional stress for that season opener, but I am happy that it is starting again. Just enjoy yourself, that's the most important thing.”
